A good day out. I was not sure what to expect with this place as found it on Google maps and chose to go as a short notice decision. Firstly, free entry is brilliant, only have to pay for parking and a guide book optional. There is not a tremendous amount of stuff here, but it was still a decent day out. Assault course for the kids which was fun, lots of cannons / large guns on display ranging in age from really old to more modern. And was very interesting seeing how the fort was used throughout history from it's construction to WW2. It's not the best place in the world, but was still fun for the kids so recommend. Staff all very friendly and welcoming, and the cafe has a decent selection of food for lunch.
What a great place to visit and spend a few hours just wandering around .There are good displays, and everything has good information. It's a very interesting place to visit ,we just liked everything about the place, and the tunnels were a great place to cool down! The graffiti on the walls ,don't miss this. I'm glad it's been protected . The staff were friendly and the place overall very clean .The museum is free. You just pay a small amount for the car park.
A truly wonderful day out. It almost feels like a hidden gem being nestled away in the countryside. The port provides a fantastic way to spend a few hours exploring its history from its initial conception upto its restoration. Highly recommended
This is a great "free to enter"museum and is well worth a visit. A very enjoyable and informative time was had. As it was free to enter, we purchased a reasonably priced brochure and enjoyed a coffee and light bite. Car parking was £3 only for the day. Lots of interesting exhibits. Although not used by us, there was a children's play area that seemed to amuse the kids. Lots of walking and space for kids to get well tired out.
Not what it seems.....this place far exceeded my expectations! With modern visitor facilities and superb exhibitions and free entry, this place is incredible. There is a very large collection of armaments in excellent condition to discover from a wide time range, all accompanied with informative plaques. There's plenty for both adults and children alike, ranging from interactive displays to a mini assault course. A great half day out.
What a fascinating place to get lost for hours in informative displays, recreations of barracks life and underground tunnels. With a well stocked cafe selling delicious food and gift shop for mementos to mark your visit, you can make a day of it, and the most amazing thing is it is completely free to visit! If military history is your thing, don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to journey through this part of Portsmouth’s heritage. I couldn’t help be both fascinated by what I was learning and saddened by man’s ingenuity in creating new and more brutal ways to maim each other but it’s a credit to the team that have put it together for visitors of all ages.
Fantastic family day out. The museum was excellent and plenty for the kids to learn and see. The entire fort was fascinating and such a unique experience - we loved walking the tunnels in particular. The staff were brilliant and FREE entry! We were happy to donate and support in other ways, totally worth a visit and would highly recommend.
Fab afternoon at Fort Nelson…. They had an obstacle course on for the kids to take part in. It was £3.50 each and they loved it. We also went down into the tunnels which we haven’t done before. Plenty of parking £3 charge. Cafe looked nice - we just grabbed a drink and ice cream from the outside kiosk. Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Experience was free, and the staff were friendly and polite. Guided tours on the hour. Plenty to see and learn. Nice bit of walking. Enjoyed the tunnel.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
