Rosslyn Chapel

Story

Rosslyn Chapel, formally known as the Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew, is a 15th-century chapel located at the village of Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland.Rosslyn Chapel was founded on a small hill above Roslin Glen as a Catholic collegiate church (with between four and six ordained canons and two boy choristers) in the mid-15th century. The chapel was founded by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness of the Scoto-Norman Sinclair family. Rosslyn Chapel is the third Sinclair place of worship at Roslin, the first being in Roslin Castle and the second (whose crumbling buttresses can still be seen today) in what is now Roslin Cemetery. The purpose of the college was to celebrate the Divine Office throughout the day and night and also to celebrate Mass for all the faithful departed, including the deceased members of the Sinclair family. During this period the rich heritage of plainsong (a single melodic line) or polyphony (vocal harmony) would be used to enrich the singing of the liturgy. An endowment was made that would pay for the upkeep of the priests and choristers in perpetuity and they also had parochial responsibilities. After the Scottish Reformation (1560), Roman Catholic worship in the chapel was brought to an end, although the Sinclair family continued to be Roman Catholics until the early 18th century. From that time the chapel was closed to public worship until 1861, when it was opened again as a place of worship according to the rites of the Scottish Episcopal Church, a member church of the Anglican Communion.

Absolutely loved our visit to Rosslyn Chapel. My wee girl (5) had a ball too. She fell in live with William, the chapel cat and she had great fun cuddling him while we listened to the excellent talk by our wonderful, enthusiastic, approachable, knowledgeable and very friendly guide. The lady was just superb. I could have listened to her for hours. She was wonderful with my wee girl too. The castle is astonishing. I was fascinated by its history and mystery. The reception and shop staff were incredibly kind and helpful too. I was blown away when I stood under the key stone. So weird. You have to try it! My wee girl was over the moon when we surprised her with her very own 'William the chapel cat' from the gift shop to help her sleep. She was out like a light! I can't wait to visit again.

We began our visit to the Chapel half an hour before the next official talk and the guide very kindly pointed out some things relevant to the Quiz sheet but added explanations and historical fact suitable for the children as well as myself. She engaged really well with the older children. She also highlighted future events to me that she thought the children would enjoy.

Beautifully constructed church with an interesting background and up on the hills of rosslyn. A short bus ride from Edinburgh city. Definitely a place to go for Fans of the movie and book. Staff on hand are friendly and knowledgeable, giving a comprehensive tour of the chapel grounds and history of the architecture. Beautifully constructed interior with intriguing murals all along the pillars and archers. An interesting stop off for many of the historical sites dotted around Edinburgh city and Scotland for that matter.

Beautiful chapel! Every part of it done by hand in the stone. So bad you can not take pictures inside, but still worth the visit. Big attention to the details!!! Nice place to visit if you are having time off! :)
