The service was impeccable absolutely worth the 12.5%! The food was fantastic but the mussels stood out-a must try if you visit. We shared the mussels as a starter which was very well accommodated. It was served well presented in split portions so we had absolutely no fuss. For mains we had the lobster w/fries and the Indonesian seafood curry both we enjoyed. The service was unexpectedly amazing. A very pleasant late launch in Winchester. We will be tempted to try any other Rick Stein’s restaurants we across.
Being a bit of a fan of all Ricks TV cookery shows my wife an I decided to treat ourselves to a bit of Rick steins in Winchester for my birthday! Disappointed is an understatement!! On arrival we were greeted by our friendly waiter and taken to our table where he was more than happy to explain some of the dishes to us. Thumbs up to the waiter The restaurant its self was nice but being open plan it had a school canteen feel to it. My wife had the prawns for starter that were served chilled! And for the price they are charging I expect them to be freshly cooked and be served hot, i can get cold prawns in my local Iceland!! Thought she did say the sourdough bread was lovely. I had the scallops, these were not seared! But looked to be boiled and the flavour was nothing to write home about. Our mains to were disappointing, my Fish and chips being bland with chips being very poor! And the batter on the fish was what i can only explain to be like donut batter. The mushy peas looking dehydrated but not to bad in flavour also tartar very average. The presentation of my wife hake was extremely basic and a side of boiled potatoes all looking very unappealing, but she said it tasted good. So 2 Drinks, 2 Sides and 2 Mains = £140 This is where the problem is for me, I do not mind paying superstar prices but the food has to be worth every penny and im afraid it was not even close. £60 - £70 is all i think we should of payed. Come on Rick up your game mate or lower your prices to match the quality of the food you sell.
Absolutely the perfect choice to end our wedding weekend! We had the best table in house, the staff were utterly amazing and spoilt us rotten. The halloumi starter - perfect Lobster - perfect Thank you all x
Visited Winchester and as my husband is a Rick Stein fan booked us in for lunch. The staff were amazing from the moment we entered. We had a few small plate starters and both had the Indonesia curry which was absolutely delicious. Rick's own lager was also really goodFood: 5/5
Fist time here since before Covid. Came for lunch, early on and almost empty so service wasn't a challenge. Starter a bisque- it was okay; proper rich, thick bisque with strong seafood flavour and a slight graininess suggesting stock was well-made using shells from the spider crabs. But there was no wow factor which is what justified the prices last time we came. Main course was good- crab pasta redolent with garlic, right proportions of other ingredients. Service was okay and as I mentioned this would have been easy due to the low number of covers. However, I find the 'discretionary service charge' a little ungracious. I always reward good service but this removes the choice without you actively making a fuss, which many diners do not wish to do as it reduces the quality of the overall dining experience. If you challenge the charge, the standard response is to question the diner as to whether there was anything wrong with the service. The answer is often no, but it was only the standard one should expect when dining in a £££ restaurant. Might as well just add 12.5% to the prices at the start - would be more honest. So overall, an okay experience.
Certainly! Here's a positive review for Rick Stein's Winchester restaurant: --- Nestled in the historic heart of Winchester, Rick Stein's establishment is a true gem for culinary enthusiasts. From the moment you step inside, the warm and inviting ambiance sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. The staff, attentive and knowledgeable, ensures every detail is perfect, from seating to service. The menu, a celebration of seafood, showcases Rick Stein's passion for fresh, quality ingredients and his expertise in bringing out their natural flavors. Each dish, from the succulent oysters to the perfectly grilled sea bass, is a testament to the care and creativity that goes into the kitchen. The flavors are balanced and bold, with a delightful emphasis on simplicity that lets the ingredients shine. Not to be overlooked, the wine list complements the menu flawlessly, featuring a thoughtful selection that pairs beautifully with the seafood-centric offerings. Whether it's a crisp white to accompany your starter or a robust red to round off the meal, the options enhance the dining experience wonderfully. What sets Rick Stein's Winchester restaurant apart, however, is its ability to make every guest feel special. Whether you're a long-time fan of Rick Stein's culinary journey or a first-time visitor, the restaurant delivers an exceptional experience that combines great food, impeccable service, and a cozy atmosphere.
We've been here several times and had amazing food and service but unfortunately this time it wasn't as expected. The fruit of the sea wasn't great, we really expected this to be exceptional especially as it was £70 the crab was tasteless, clams and cockles had a weird taste, mussels weren't that great either. Oysters were okay, we liked the prawns and scallops were good.
Very average experience. The festive menu was again very average. Good quality mussels but curry sauce lacked flavour and depth. The mushroom starter was thrown together. The only dish we agreed was great was selected off the main menu - the seafood linguine. Service was friendly but slow and not very attentive - sat at the table with empty plates in front of us for far too long, for a place that wasn’t overly busy that should at least be regimented. Needless to say we asked for the £20 service charge to be removed, not only for that reason but we don’t live in America and it shouldn’t be added to a bill in the first place. Give what you want, when you want and if you can afford to.
Wonderful food, very friendly, welcoming, attentive service. We went to Rick Stein's in Padstow 25 years ago, and wanted to relive that experience - of course it's not the same as being in that wonderful Cornish town though that place or "Rickstow" as it's also now known is horribly overcrowded in season, but this restaurant in Winchester definitely had the same vibe from the staff, and the food was absolutely wonderful - rich and subtle flavours, perfectly prepared, served in am attentive and timely manner by staff who really enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the food and drink.
Went here with the wife for a dinner after visiting the Cathedral. Given the prices being charged and the name on the door we had high hopes.....but alas the experience was very average. We tried the scallops but they were rather bland, with the focus clearly being on the presentation rather than the taste. The Fish and Chips were good to be fair, but nothing amazing. The curry was well spiced, but of some of the fish used in it was tough and rubbery. The badly scratched cutlery, dirty mirrors and annoyingly dim and continually fluctuating lighting did somewhat lessen the experience. On the whole it's okay. But getting "okay" at those prices isn't ideal.
