Raglan Castle/ Castell Rhaglan

Story

Raglan Castle is a late medieval castle located just north of the village of Raglan in the county of Monmouthshire in south east Wales. The modern castle dates from between the 15th and early 17th-centuries, when the successive ruling families of the Herberts and the Somersets created a luxurious, fortified castle, complete with a large hexagonal keep, known as the Great Tower or the Yellow Tower of Gwent. Surrounded by parkland, water gardens and terraces, the castle was considered by contemporaries to be the equal of any other in England or Wales. During the English Civil War the castle was held on behalf of Charles I and was taken by Parliamentary forces in 1646. In the aftermath, the castle was slighted, or deliberately put beyond military use; after the restoration of Charles II, the Somersets declined to restore the castle. Raglan Castle became first a source of local building materials, then a romantic ruin, and is now a modern tourist attraction.

Amazing, huge historic castle. Quite an imposing site. So many nooks & crannies to explore so our kids (3, 5 & 7) all loved it. We had lunch at the picnic tables in the lawn area at the front before having a good explore. It's well presented and there are plenty of things to see, but you do have to keep an eye on younger explorers as there are plenty of slippery steps, uneven floors and drops etc. We would definitely come back, especially as it's a cheap day out.

What a lovely surprise! The walk we’d planned in the area was rained off and so we visited the castle as a last minute alternative. We weren’t expecting such a beautiful, or extensive, ruin. The weather had also perked up and we got to enjoy it in the sunshine. An interesting place with lots of nooks and crannies to explore. All very picturesque.

Excellent castle, very big and plenty to explore in your own time. There wasn’t much information to read though which was a slight downside and not too much inside so if it rains bring a coat. The Beaufort restaurant is a 10min walls away and does good lunchtime food.

This was so much fun to explore and our 5 year old loved it! Some amazing views even though it was raining at the time we went. Will definitely go back.

Well worth a visit. One of the best mediaeval castle ruins in South Wales. Worth taking a couple of hours to explore the history associated with Raglan.
