Although this in mainly in ruins, it was interesting and informative. Nice walk around the castle after we had been in. Although there's no cafe, there is a gift shop that also sells ice cream, coffee, tea and drinking chocolate Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Nice castle , the only castle in the North not to fall to the Scott's. Lovely pond in front and a nice walk around the outside of the castle itself. Small gift shop on site no cafe, although they do a selection of hot drink and ice creams. Free car parkVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
First impressions were good on the approach and initial glance of the bailey area but thereafter it was disappointing. The museum area was poorly displayed and there were rooms with very little in them. Outside there wasn't that much to see. Access to the chapel is up very steep stairs and wheelchair users would really struggle with access over most of the site. Points of interest are seeing the house within the castle walls, the chapel and the small oriel window. Allow 30 minutes for a visit. Sadly I can't recommend going out of your way to see it
Lovely visit. Colourful Rhodedendrons in bloom. You can walk round the outside as well as the inside of the castle. Scenic spot, with lake.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A lovely place to visit plenty of information on history set in beautiful grounds. Lovely little picnic area to sit for drinks and picnic. We went on Sunday and it was so peaceful. Would recommend.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Very interesting lesser known castle, we enjoyed our quick tour. Only castle in Northern England not to have been taken by the Scots when England and Scotland were warring.
Last visit of the weekend, Prudhoe Castle near Newcastle. A real gem with plenty to see, including a regency house, bring a picnic as its a nice spot to linger!
A real surprise, this is a charming, but small property to visit. The car park is small too, though I doubt it gets super busy. It's a very short walk to the entrance. Entry appears to be taken largely on trust it is English Heritage as the shop is inside the castle. There are plenty of picnic tables in the courtyard, plus bins. Toilets are clean & adequate though the hand dryers are useless. Disabled toilet access is inside the castle. Staff are friendly & helpful. Lots of hidey- holes for the children to play in and walks around the outside of the castle. A few hours well spent.
I have enjoyed it. It's easy to find, & like all English Heritage site, it's full of history. I always buy the book about the site, I find it a complement to what I am seeing. I enjoy walking in the grounds around the castle, it made for some interesting pictures
What an amazing historic place, visited to let my son get some drone footage of the castle, had never been before. It has decent parking, easy access from the A695 and seems fairly complete. It was quite late and we were the only. People there at the time and it looked Locked up not sure if they do tours or how much you can see if your allowed in to have a look. Would be really worth going back.
