The most impressive and best-preserved of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts, Portchester Castle was originally built in the late 3rd century. You can visit the Roman walls surrounding the castle for free but the Castle itself is well worth the entrance fee with stunning views from the top and interesting exhibitions. One of the English Heritage volunteers showed us the graffiti left by prisoners with fascinating invites into the history. Worth mentioning that English Heritage do not provide the car park so members still need to pay
Never been before which I felt needed resolving as a bit of a history buff. A Roman military centre which was used extensively after they left as it was an obviously well placed site. Roman walls and gatehouse still in place but a castle and church from the Norman period also in good order. The original staircase is a bit of a tough climb and the stairs put in by English Heritage would probably be banned by building control for their steepness but it is worth it. Painted wall is interesting if hard to see with the lighting, and there is some informative detail about the prisoners of war during the Napoleonic period. The church is lovely and attached to a very pleasant tea room.
Wonderful old castle in a beautiful setting. There is parking nearby, payable from 10 am. The staff were friendly and informative and entry fee includes an audio guide to take around with you, which tells you about the very interesting and varied history of the castle. Gift shop, coffee cart and church, and a lovely walk around the perimeter, check out the tides. You can enter and enjoy the castle grounds for free.
A lovely quiet place to visit with fantastic views from the roof. Very steep narrow stairs in placesnot for everyone. The English Heritage volunteer guide knew his subject and was very passionate about his role.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNot sure
An amazing view of the surrounding area from the top of the well preserved keep. A steep but rewarding climb! Interesting history but without the guidebook not free or audio tour free! there is little to explain what you are looking at.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This is a fascinating historic site that offers a deep dive into England's rich past. The castle, with its well-preserved Roman walls and medieval architecture, provides stunning views over Portsmouth Harbour. Exploring the grounds and the keep is both educational and enjoyable, with informative displays and plenty of space to roam. The site is peaceful and picturesque, making it perfect for history buffs and families alike. Whether you're interested in history or simply want a scenic spot for a walk, Portchester Castle is a must-visit.
Driven past here so many times but never stopped. Had an hour to spare so after a review that said reasonable parking £1.10 for 1 hour we went for a stroll around the outside and grounds. All free except a charge to enter castle. Lovely view from sea. Mobile cafe within grounds that looked nice and a pretty church too.Visited onWeekday
We had a good 1.5 hours here. Kids liked it. Nice view from the top of the keep. Not sure i would of paid £34 for a family ticket but We are cadw members so get free entry, people should consider becoming members if they visit sites like this quite often as it works out much better value for money.
Beautiful castle. Had a fab afternoon there with my daughter as a pre college day out. We arrived to find ample parking on site. there was also a wedding The staff couldn't have been friendlier with a lovely gentleman who walks round the castle taking the time to explain the finer details of the castles history. You really get a feel for the castles history especially with graffiti etched into the walls from as far back as 1866. Lovely little museum showing the details and finds of artifacts over the years One of the best I have seen so far. Tickets purchased online for the xray discount.
It was a fantastic day out. Much of the castle is free to walk around, and then a small part is English Heritage. Great for children probably under 13, and dogs are welcome. Parking may be a problem on a weekend or a bank holiday, particularly if the weather is good. There is a charge for parking, although blue badge holders are free.
