Portchester Castle

Story

Looking for a fun family day out? Visit Portchester Castle in Hampshire, South East England. It provides the perfect setting for a relaxed, fun, historic day out! The castle’s commanding location has made it a major factor in the Solent's defences for hundreds of years.

The most impressive and best-preserved of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts, Portchester Castle was originally built in the late 3rd century. An exhibition in the keep interprets the history of the castle and Portchester village, and displays finds excavated on site. The inclusive audio tour explains life in the castle over the centuries.

Brilliant place to go with kids, dogs, family or on your own. There is church and cemetery inside and usually "Seahorse coffee truck" is opened there, so you can grab a bite and coffee and sit inside the castle on the bench or to have picnic on the blanket, surrounded by old walls of Portchester Castle. Highly recommend.
The inside of the Castle is closed, however you can still enter in through the main gates where there is huge open space, church and cafe. Not sure if the castle cafe open but currently in the court yard there is Seahorse Cafe in a trailer take out for snacks and drinks
Great place to come especially if you have children because there is so much to explore and so much space for them to run around. If the weather's good take a picnic and you'll be sorted.
Very interesting to walk around and see all the history from the castle. Good audio guide and boards around the castle to explain each room. The grounds of the castle are free and nice to see and the castle is worth the admission. Going on a nice day also helps the experience
