ABOUT US
The PIETY project began in November 2005 with the aim of providing the local Muslim community with a variety of support and services in addition to contributing to the general well-being of society.
We set up a madrassa which teaches Arabic, Qur'anic recitation and Islamic studies at the weekends.
We began citizenship courses, English language courses, IT training and Islam awareness training.
We engage the youth and work with our partners to provide counselling, drug rehabilitation and family support.
We also started implementing schemes aimed at the wider society including looking after the elderly and organising street cleaning initiatives.
In order to effectively provide these services PIETY needed a Centre which could house these various activities. An ideal building was identified in 2007, the old Labour Party Headquarters in the heart of Plymouth. The asking price was £410,000 and had to be raised in a matter of months. In 2007 we began an appeal to support the project and in early 2008 managed to acquire the building.
To establish a model Islamic centre for Muslims in Europe, situated in the historical seaside resort of Plymouth, United Kingdom.
British society is currently undergoing social and cultural fragmentation. The traditional social and economic structures are in decline resulting in a vacuum that is not being filled by government, civil society or faith communities. This national situation is having an impact on the Muslim community. There is a lack of support from the main pillars of the community. The mosques, who are not providing the right moral, spiritual and cultural guidance or indeed services in a rapidly changing world.
The PIETY Centre can, with the right support become a pillar for both the Muslim community and wider society. By providing services in religious education and civic parcipitation the PIETY Centre can fill the vacuum. Our services would reach all members of the local community in this traditionally English maritime town. We would provide for the most neglected and vulnerable groups in society such as the elderly and the youth whilst continuing to build bridges with the wider community.
We belive this to be the true vision of Islam in the West.
