Pitstone Windmill
"A rare and striking example of an early form of post millThis unusual survivor is one of the oldest post mills in Britain. Pitstone windmill ground flour for the local village for almost three hundred years until a freak storm in the early 1900s left it damaged beyond economic repair.Donated to the National Trust in 1937 Pitstone Windmill has been faithfully restored by a dedicated team of local volunteers. Today you can explore both the inner and outer workings of the windmill; including the massive post upon which the mill turns and the tail pole which the miller used to position the sails into the wind, while also taking in spectacular views of the surrounding Chilterns countryside."

Beautiful and scenic location. There is small parking facility available, just for few cars though. The sight is managed by National Trust apparently! We loved to watch the sunset at the Pitstone Windmill! Not sure if picnics are allowed though.Wait timeNo wait
A windmill in a field with a lay by to stop park and have a ganders. Good fun to walk round. Blurb on website says it's open for indoor and outdoor visits but wasn't when we walked up. Beautifully restored and looks lovelyVisited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
One of the oldest if not the oldest post Mills in the country. Not open very often but well worth a visit when it is. Lots of good walks in the area so can combine a viewing with a lovely walk in the Chiltern hills.
Pitstone Windmill is a historic windmill located in the village of Pitstone in Buckinghamshire, England. The windmill is one of the oldest surviving post mills in the country, and dates back to the early 17th century. The windmill was originally used to grind grain, and it remained in operation until the early 20th century. In 1937, the windmill was given to the National Trust, who have since restored it and opened it to the public.
Went today, for 1st time, was fairly busy on arrival parking not great. Short walk to windmill, met by lovely volunteers. Lots of information and really enjoyed learning about the history off the windmill, well worth a visit before you head to Ashridge down the road.
Beautiful windmill at Pitstone situated near ivanhoe, land is owned by national Trust and some Sundays is open for a few hours. Great stop over if your head from Dunstable down to Tring.
One of the few remaining Windmills in the local area and possibly the oldest mill in the UK. Remember visiting my late Aunt and Uncle whilst they were there working on the refurbishment . The team they were with did an amazing job considering it still looks great after over 50 years. A definite visit if you love local history. It's run by the National Trust and opens to the public certain days. When not open you can still visit the mill but only to view it from the outside.
Lovely place to go with a nice sunset. Free parking, good for a wander round. Never actually been inside but a nice place to go for some scenic photos
The place looked a bit sad and in disrepair. Would have been nice to have a bit more historical information.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Wonderful looking windmill, with beautiful scenery surrounding it in the shape of 'The Chiltern Hills'. Small car park that can hold around 5 to 10 cars close to the windmill and a short walk to the windmill along the footpath. Great architecture in stunning countryside.
