Had a great few hours at Picton Castle despite a high of 11 degrees mid June! I'm only deducting 1 star because entry fee did not include a guided tour of the castle, this was a further £6 each which wasn't made clear until we had paid the £12 admission. We decided to not do the tour as felt a little cheated. The high was definitely the walled garden which was beautiful even though a further 4 weeks would see it full of much more colour as blooms were waiting to burst. So so many varieties of flowers and shrubs that I was totally unfamiliar with. Great textures, combinations and a small section dedicated to vegetables. A beautiful lilly pond and water feature centrally placed making the whole space absolutely stunning, definitely one of my favourite gardens I have visited. We had a flying display of owls and then later on of birds of prey and the information provided was quite fun and engaging. There are some other small animal enclosures which children will love. Plenty of space to eat, kids to run about and explore. We had a tasty lunch. Had seen a review about it being overpriced but I can honestly say I thought it was very appropriate for the portion size which was very generous and carrot cake was yummy. Not used to writing such a lengthy review but as a couple on a cold wet day, it really was so enjoyable. Hats off to the head gardener there.
Its a nice place to walk around , the walled garden is picturesque and a few play areas for the kids It calls itself welsh owl garden and zoo , zoo is a bit of a stretch as its mainly owls ‍ , but the owl display was good , the person doing the display was funny and informative . The restaurant was large with plenty of seats inside and out , the service was slow and they didn't seem that busy but the food was good . There's a lawn mower museum and the old mortuary !! It was very disappointing that you have to pay extra to have a guided tour of the castle , especially when its £12 entry fee .
Told the kids we were heading to castle. I'd seen on the website there are a few owls so thought well at least it'll interest 1 of our 4 kids. Wow what an amazing day we had. We spent the majority of it in the Owl and bird area. The first talk of the day was about the birds of prey. The guy who looks after the birds and does the talking was amazing. He Was so knowledgeable and actually really funny! The owl display too was fun and he gets them to swoop really low. The kids enjoyed the repile talk and got to hold a snake. Then the large bird show at the end of the day was also fantastic. Made better by the amazing weather. Kids enjoyed the boardwalk but one of my two year old twins fell off into a mud patch so be careful! Walked garden was very pretty and there is a pond with lots of tadpoles in. Highly recommend Picton Castle. Its so much more than a castle!
Picton Castle is a nice place to visit. Unfortunately, not all the rooms were open for viewings. We especially liked the round room with secret hiding places within the book cases. The grounds are well spaced out with a , Walled Garden and paths for a stroll around the area. The cafe was a nice find with delicious food.
Lovely day out. Beautiful set up - variety off flowers, plants, trees and garden areas to explore. Able to push wheelchair and pushchair around. Board walk and play area. Owl garden and zoo is great too with different showings over the day. The castle is pretty-additional charges apply. Wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Toilets. Cash and contactless. Suitable for couples, families and group visits. Plenty of picnic area. Cafe, icecreams, gallery, shop, two holiday cottages at the end of the garden. Also a wedding venue.
Our day out at Picton castle was highly enjoyable, there was plenty of things to do and see for all ages. The tour around the castle was very interesting- the tour guide knew alot of knowledge on the previous owners of the castle, a well needed history lesson! The tour was a reasonable price and the entry fee to. The birds, owls and other animals were a great thing for the kids to get exited about aswell. I highly suggest Picton castle as a good day out.
Lovely few hours at Picton Castle. The grounds are well maintained, the Rhododendron were in full bloom giving a beautiful show of colour. Nice lunch in the tapas restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the owl display the falconer both knowledgeable and entertaining will definitely go again when we have more time.
Loads to see and do, without even doing the castle guided tour which costs extra. The zoo and bird flying demonstrations were really good included in your entry fee and the grounds are massive, the newly refurbished walled garden being a highlight. We were there for over four hours and didn't even get to the galleries or look properly around the lawnmower museum yes, you read correctly. There are loads of quiet places to sit and chill out in the grounds. Highly recommended. Restrooms: Plentiful and very clean. Dog-friendliness: Dogs welcome on leads in the grounds.
Fabulous garden, lots of different areas with imaginative planting and on the whole very well cared for. Admission doesn't include the castle extra £6, but that was fine for me as it was the garden I was interested in. The owl flying display was great, if you're a photographer bring your camera - the flying area is small with trees behind you should be able to get some pretty reasonable shots.
A great time was had here, somewhere to go as it was a rainy day. We arrived for the 11am Castle Tour. The guide was brilliant. Full of knowledge & very entertaining. We went in alot of rooms, all nice & well looked after. Managed to walk round all the beautiful gardens. The walled garden is amazing. A great owl garden, & reptiles. Also a bird of prey display. Plants for sale. a lovely cafe too. If you are a member of Historic Houses you get in for free & it does save you quite abit.
