Stayed here for 1 night. On arrival, it looks just like a country park, but the campsite was well sign posted. When we arrived, there was no one around or a reception/office bit for the campsite, so we just parked up but had to ask the only other motorhome on site where and what we had to do. We checked in at the reception in the café area, which was totally unorganised nothing was ready for our arrival. We got given a key and fob, key supposedly for the electric boxes which weren't locked anyway and the fob which was for use of the toilets. The toilets that weren't in the camping area and, in my opinion, unsafe to use at night as the door was wedged open all day for use of activities anyone could be in them before locking up. As well as the country park being open to walking public all night.nThe pitch we had been put on was an absolute disgrace the concrete was all up and down from tree roots. There was only 3 of us parked up so we moved to a flater one. The actaul campsite itself is run down and not looked after. There were weeds coming up through the concrete bases. But the views of the lake are beautiful. Once the park had closed we took a walk down to the park where there were teenagers wondering around we soon noticed people night fishing and others walking in the park which for a campsite didn't feel very secure. We decided to walk to the main entrance to check the gate was locked, which is was, and found who only we assume was the security guard sat in his car at the gate. Which was the other side of the park, leaving the campsite open for anyone to walk through. This was a little worrying. But once in bed, it felt like a being a million miles away and was very peaceful waking up over the lake. There is a main road just behind, but minimal noise can be heard. Lots of activities to do in the country park during the day, making it a good base, but just be cautious that it is a country park and anyone can enter and leave when they please
As far as touring vans and camping is concerned this place is desperately in need of some attention, no grey waste emptying point that I could see. This is a real shame as there is plenty of potential here, it's a great place to walk the dogs, the toilets were clean as we're the showers. Staff friendly, we didn't eat here but it looked like it was ok. Handy distance for Bike Park Wales was our reason for staying. I did notice plenty of others have complained regarding conditions. I really hope someone realises that improvements are required.
We live in nearby Merthyr Tydfil. We visit here regularly. I enjoy having a coffee from the cafe while walking around the lake. The kids love the park. This is a inexpensive way to kill a few hours with the family.
Nice walk around the lake only fault the people on bikes should have a bell to let you know when they are behind you And the same about the runners on a Thursday they take the width of the path you have to move out of their way they don't give into people walking or people with pushchairs they think they own the park for the amount of runners they should be running on the road not in a park
Great back to basics field. Very friendly staff.
