Buried deep in the countryside, this is a castle well worth the effort of finding. A ruin to explore. Children love this place. Great views to be had from the top and plenty of space outside for picnics or letting off steam. Dont expect Alton Towers !!

We stayed near Shaftesbury for a weekend break and chose this as it was nearby and wouldn’t take too long to wander around. It is indeed tucked away, but well-signposted and worth the drive. We took the audio tour, which helped to put the information boards into context and we didn’t have to stand in the rain, reading the boards! The setting, too, is beautiful and, with better weather, we would have gone walking. We spent a good couple of hours there and would return. There is no café, but the entrance booth can do warm drinks.

Fantastic day trip, set in beautiful countryside. The castel its self was great with fantastic signage and a great audio tour. Would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in history or just likes old castles. The great thing is it's dog friendly.

What a beautiful setting for a castle. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We went on a drizzly day at the end of January and had the whole place to ourselves. Dogs are allowed everywhere, even inside the castle, and mine loved climbing the spiral stairs!

As another review as stated - this castle pops out of the countryside unexpectedly after following a narrow winding round that becomes almost a muddy lane at times before opening out into the valley with the castle. The castle itself is relatively unusual in its design making it well worth a visit. The grounds are also very nice, with some lovely views. The staff were extremely friendly when visiting.
