About

The Old Crown, Public House on Highgate Hill

Story

The Old Crown at 90 Highgate Hill, is a pub with B&B and dining facilities that has been serving beer to the locals of Highgate for 200 years.

With bags of outside space (front and rear) and plenty of room inside, you'll find plenty to keep you entertained including live music, film nights, BBQs, pool and football tables...

We also offera broad selection of tasty meals and bar snacks. And ofcourse, our legendary Karl Marx tea rooms located inside the pub and just a few minutes walk from Highgate's famous cemetery in which he is interred. In fact, it was in this very pub where on 14th March 1883, that the very same political philosopher allegedly choked on a red sauce smothered hot dog and drew his last breath...or so local legend has it.

Some say, that his ghost still haunts the Old Crown whispering the words of his two most notable works, The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Das Capital (1867-94)...and that those discussing the materialist conception of history often feel an inexplicable chill of paranormal origin.

To honour Karl, we have also named our house beer after him, The Karl Marx Beer, available at the class struggle friendly price of just £3 per pint.

Didn't eat here hence the one star as we just popped in for a drink. Always nice to find and check out a new boozer and this one on the fringes of Bloomsbury doesn't disappoint. Friendly service and a nice selection of beers. The place was pretty busy for an early afternoon and had a varied mix of people including young families which is always a good sign. Definitely worth checking out.
Great pub with a London feel. A must visit if you want the experience of a traditional London pub!Service: 5/5
A Timeless Gem: The Old CrownLocated in the heart of London, The Old Crown is a quintessential British pub exuding charm and character. With classic pub fare, cozy ambiance, and friendly staff, it offers an authentic experience for locals and visitors alike.Food: 5/5
Sharing details of my experience with the a particular doorman. Ive been in this pub a few times, chiefly because Im often at the Museum of Comedy across the road. Had a drink early evening in here and as usual very friendly and professional staff. Nice atmosphere. Went to go back into the pub at 10pm with a female friend, just the two of us, not an big group of guys etc. to be clear. Immediately two bouncers stepped in front of the door. One said nothing so no issue with him. The other was immediately rude and aggressive for no reason, asking what 'we want', 'what we are doing etc' apparently there was a private function - but he could have obviously been polite and explained but chose not to be. Really odd and completely out of keeping for a pub in this area. He was very definitely trying to come across as street and gangster and intimidating, to two ordinary people trying to go in for a drink - was laughable honestly but also just completely unnecessary. Ending with him telling me, we weren't welcome and 'go home' shooing his hand at me. Had a good slanging match with him which he entirely initiated with his attitude. Shame for a pub in a nice area.
Nice place to hang with friends. Menu isn’t substantial so don’t expect a proper meal. They only have some Mexican tacos and quesadillas as small bites. We ordered the drinks special - 2 for 1.
My previous workplace was close to a pub, so I used to go there with my customers and staff to take a break after work. Today, after quitting my job, I went with the staff who had been working for me for the first time in a long time. The staff welcomed me and gave me a shot because I was a regular. I asked him if he remembered me and he said yes of course, which made me very happy. I haven't written a review yet, but I thought this pub really valued its regulars See you soon Thank you so much!! From dear Japanese and Chinese customers.
This place is an absolute dream for vegans! I was almost overwhelmed by the menu, and frankly I'd order one of everything if I could possibly eat that much. Beyond the food, the prices are more than fair and the staff is super friendly. Lastly, it's a beautiful and cozy establishment. I have been to many nice pubs in my time, but this has to be my favourite.
Never felt more unwelcome in pub. Got told by the bouncers when we entered that they only accepted mixed groups only we were 3 guys unless we gave them money or a free drink. We agreed to give them a free red bull when we entered to which they agreed. At the bar, we ordered 3 pints and a redbull and paid. They never gave us the redbull and was told that was the payment for the bribe. When I asked the manger if he knew the door staff and bar staff were taking bribes, he said "i know". Shocking behaviour.
Great place! Nice atmosphere and all, but the customer service was the best - there was a slight delay with the food and Valentina at the bar handled it like a pro! Major props for that :Food: 5/5
One of the hidden gems in London, in my opinion. The general manager Mitch is easy to talk to fun guy with great stories and is awesome host.Service: 5/5
