Karen is my friend and associate and a truly gifted OCD therapist. 

I had been trying to get well since I had a relapse 2.5 years ago when my severe contaminaton OCD left me virtually housebound and so scared that I would not face up to my OCD at all. 

I had made a bit of  progress but was still having one good day and two bad when, in spring this year, Karen suggested meeting up regularly for a chat and lunch and some informal ERP. 

Karen gave me some amazing coping tips which I practice every day. When we met she  always took me out of my comfort zone. To begin with, all I wanted was to do some shopping and have lunch. But Karen persuaded me that to get well I had to stop doing avoidance. So she took me to places I had never visited so that I could not avoid my feared objects (manhole covers). She encouraged me to stand on, walk past and gradually to ignore manhole covers so that they were no longer at the forefront of my brain. She pointed out the errors in the way I was doing my ERP and persuaded me to refocus and sit out the fears instead of trying to analyse the thoughts. The more I have done the exposure therapy, the easier it has become and I have made huge progess in a very short time. I am no longer afraid of going out and my life has changed for the better.

In fact, eight months on, I am better than I have been in years. I still get the OCD thoughts but they are nowhere near so real and anxiety-provoking as they were at the beginning of the year.  Being almost well is wonderful. I have loads of spare time. I am cheerful and full of fun which is the real me. I have not felt this good for many years. I am filling the spare time left over due to the absence of washing and checking with wholesome and fun hobbies. I rarely  think twice about going out nowadays.
