I would like to mention the fantastic receptionists particularly Jackie among all of them and the nurses and especially nurse practitioners Charlotte Smith and Sue Legg. These nurse practitioners will listen and follow up with any tests they can to help. It is a pity you cannot always see a GP - in particular a female GP. Hence, I feel sometimes these fabulous nurse practioners have to work so hard and go above and beyond the call of duty. You really are superb - thank you so much.
Needs an edit as it has not been available to the general public as a GPs since COVID. Operating on a phone based first come first serve basis that bears no relationship to the severity or urgency of your issue. Woefully understaffed like everywhere. Use at your peril as if you are somehow able to get through the unbelievable hoops to speak to someone then definitely try the lottery that week as the gods are shining on you. The most likely outcome is you'll need to join the queue for tomorrow's phone lottery, rinse and repeat. Or try the pharmacy next door as the surgery's phone msg says for minor ailments who then direct you back to the doctor's in an endless loop of pass the patient. Doctors are amazing if you get in, but the best of luck trying and if anyone figures it out let us all know in the comments below.
Shocking, told my elderly Mum that she wasn't housebound after breaking her hip in 2 places and she could walk to surgery to have stitches out, when it clearly states on her discharge letter that district nurse will come around. Didn't realise the receptionist had been to medical school!
If you make an appointment for a patient without their knowledge, it's helpful to let them know. Then you won't be annoyed when they miss it! Posting on behalf of someone else.
Have to say the online request/communication system is really good. Very prompt to respond and easy to use. Managed to get some covid vaccination certificate advise which was what my query was about. I did try to call but the queue to speak to someone was pretty long so this system is really good. Also like being able to access mine and my children's medical records.
The whole structure of the appointment system feels geared to making it as difficult as possible to get a face-to-face consultation. If you can endure waiting on the phone for, normally, a minimum of half an hour listening to the endless cycle of messages repeatedly trying to palm you off to various other services you finally speak to the receptionist. This presents a new, human challenge where requesting an appointment is met with thinly-veiled derision in the form of saying the word 'sorry' where any actual emotional connection to the word has become lost in a time now long forgotten at the time of day you've chosen to call in to ask for such an obscure, niche function of a GP surgery. Appointments are 'released' like some form of rare, captive pokemon creature at 7am or 8am by telephone apparently by the all-powerful Appointments Computer and until such time the availability of appointments are a closely guarded secret. And don't dare question the legitimacy of this distribution method - dissent will see you hung up on by the receptionist who isn't interested in hearing your concerns. In fairness to her she's probably as utterly sick of the situation as the people trying to get the appointments. Cue then a daily scramble of local residents climbing over each other, each putting themselves through the trial-by-telephone in order to obtain that precious 10 minutes of time with a healthcare professional, like a crowd of eager children grasping for a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. In my opinion it's plain wrong that the appointment system works in this way. It is indicative of a GP surgery that needs fundamental structural changes to provide people with the ability to easily see their doctor in an acceptable timeframe.
Very quick service from receptionist to nurse to blood test and scan at LRI for DVT in leg, put on blood thinners in case it was a clot, scan confirmed it was a DVT and said that Oakham was really to be commended for there action as I had no normal signs, and putting me on the medication had helped while waiting for scan, I also saw a dr, yesterday face to face which was so reassuring as not seen one inlast year, even going through 2 operations for cancer, he put me at ease and made me feel human again, this is all patients need especially the elderly, as they don't all have modern technology or cars, thankyou Oakham for your service well done
I just wanted to add some comments about Oakham Medical Practice. They always recieve poor reviews and insults on social media, but my recent experience has been nothing short of excellence. I became ill on Wednesday 24.08.22, I completed the online form, recieved a response telling me I needed to ring due to the issue severe abdominal pain. This I did and they booked a call back from Dr Pearson, who then asked me to go into Rutland Hospital to meet her. This I did and was met immediately by Dr Pearson and the team who then due to my issue had me hooked up on a drip and gave me morphine via IV and summoned an Ambulance, all whilst keeping me reassured and comfortable. The service was phenomenal and exceptional, so thank you to all concerned. Remember all surgeries are under pressure, so a little patience and understanding from us the public should be the norm, as opposed to the relentless slagging off these teams get.
Excellent service and expert advice from Will in the Physio dept. Very detailed initial consultation with practical advice on stretches and general care plus early face to face appointment made. Very impressed.
Excellent service. Emailed problem to them, acknowledged receipt same day, Doctor called within 3 days. Appointment/ consultation made with Doctor within 4 days. Further tests arranged within a week after consult. Can’t ask for more. Very professional service. Well done.
