Wasted best years of my life at this place. Mandela Art building severely underfunded, dirty and unhygienic. Food prices across the college extortionate not really something you’d expect in a place for students who don’t earn much money? Staff on the Art and Design Level 3 course not good, impolite, unprofessional and rude. Care more about attendance than students mental and physical health. Double standards for many students. Harassed by security guards when wearing my lanyard ID, intimidated as a young person, when reported, nothing rectified. Other courses offered trips abroad, my course nothing. No heating in winter, no air conditioning in summer. Facilities also not good in the Mandela building. Please rethink your choice if you decide to go here. 0/10 do not recommend. Place needs a good inspection, as not fit for purpose.
Wouldnt recommended this college to anyone, would rather go back to high school then go here again. I studied art for my first year and got 0 support and didnt even get my grades back at the end of the year, was bullied and complained to student support multiple times and nothing was done about it. My second year i studied hospitality and catering also had no support especially with my autism, i couldnt work in the bistro front of house because of my social anxiety and sensory issues and when i had breakdowns they told me to have 5 mins outside and then come back, i spoke to many different staff to see if i could be placed somewhere else when i had foh and they told me id be kicked iff the course if i didnt attend. At the end of the year our tutor told us we would be going to flamingo land, he told me if i done a powerpoint for him i could go on the trip which i completed and got my consent forms. The night before the trip he put out a message saying that me and 6 other students would not be attending the trip and instead would be working in kitchens or front of house. The reason i wasnt allowed to go was because of my attendance my attendance was bad because of bus strikes that happened for 3-4 months even though a boy in my course who has bullied multiple people and has been taken out of lessons was allowed to go and my attitude towards college, maybe if they were more accommodating i would be more positive towards college. Not only this but in the lifestyle building they have an older man allowed in the building after multiple young girls have complained about him making them uncomfortable including a young staff member. Absolutely disgusting will not be going back next year.
My final year here was horrendous all my teachers left the person in charge locked himself in his office refusing to speak to anybody. We tried complaining to the college and they sent someone over to investigate but the guy just hired agency teachers who where awful and barly spoke English and the college investigater even admitted they where awful but they where just there to see if we had teachers or not so they couldn't do anything about it. As time went on we weren't learning anything and assignments kept on piling on and I just gave up it was obvious what they where doing they where just going to blame covid for everything. My mental health was also being affected the thought of me walking 8 miles a day for my education for no reason was very emotionally and mentally draining and I just needed to stop coming in but I still got reports from my mates and near the end of the year one guy in my group managed to teacher himself and get all the assignments done and he shared his answers with the group so I started coming in again but unfortunately by the time I got the answers it was too late I didn't have enough time to get the work done I did have a meeting with the assistant of the head of rail and she did exactly what I said they would do blame covid and apologise I was also told I wasn't allowed in education again without paying this place stole 4 years of my life for nothing I should have gone with my gut and moved couse when I had the chance this happened in 2022 Rail Academy and the fact the teachers in charge Dan hasn't faced any consequences and still works there to this day is disgusting and insulting at the very most. The agency staff who ended up getting permanent jobs in my opinion Dan's sick way to spite us allegedly got sacked the very next year.
I absolutely would recommend this college! I loved it here, the staff are so lovely even the ones i didn't have as a lecturer. they are also approachable/accessible when needed. Thanks to the help and support i recieved i am in uni and definitely going back to do my teaching degree once im finished. The support for mental health is brilliant here too. I can't thank them enough
Probably the worst place I’ve ever been. The campus is nice enough, enrolled into a HE course, teachers were changed mid course, we’re told we had to complete all work but always at risk of being kicked off the course if it wasn’t done to a high enough standard however we were taught absolutely nothing, we’re given booklets and handout, teachers would go off on tangents about things with no relation to the subjects we were studying, told us the jobs we wanted to do were unrealistic and boring. Made it clear they didn’t want to be there, didn’t get paid enough and hated their jobs. No communication at all with the students, any messages sent asking for help etc are read and ignored, never assigned a tutor etc.. left with no idea who to contact about anything. I can’t stress enough how bad this college and the people running it truly are
Some teachers are not polite and not professional. Also inconsiderate. I don't advise you to study at Newcastle College, especially ESOL courses. I can't believe that in strike I couldn't come even they offered an amount for the buses. The teacher she's kept talking to me and made me feel like i did excuses to miss classes. The truth is that I live in other a small town with no any kind of buses that in time. Let me tell you another sad short story. I applied for a course because i want to be a therapist, and when i ask the teacher what kind of jobs after the course? She's kept saying everything except what i want to know, and when i decided not to continue the course, she told me you CAN NOT study in the future at Newcastle College. Bad behavior and unprofessional teachers.
this college kicked me out without a warning and so much of lack of communication i would not suggest this horrible of a college to my future kids or anyone in general because i have told them my problems and yet going behind my back to kick me out after telling them my struggles. They also have been recording me in public without my permission like recording minors without permission is illegal yet they still do because they have no sense of morality.
The college it’s self is nice and clean, dont get me wrong my teachers are nice and understanding, that’s the part I like and the course it’s self I like. But there’s some false advertising and rude staff members outside my course. I was told we were gonna do 3D animation when applying and when I got in I told we do it in the 2nd year. Supprise when I got to second year I got told we don’t do it and never have. Ontop of that I’ve had a member of staff full on take my college id and refuse to give it back, then when I ask for it back she said no? I don’t understand why the college claims they do things on the course when they don’t but it really needs sorting
During the span of my 2 year course, lessons were often cancelled due to shortage of staff and students weren't informed until they turned up to college after hours of travel in some cases. On top of this, during the second year, half a year's worth of our work was lost by the staff meaning we had to redo anything that was hand written or not saved, no special consideration given. Organisation from the college was horrendous and students were often waiting on site for a 3 hour gap between lessons just for the lesson to be cancelled. The class once turned up for a trip and no teachers were there, after a day of waiting we were informed that the teacher had quit the day before and the trip wasn't taking place. Studying here has felt like a massive waste of time and i tell myself regularly that i would have been better off at sixth form.
TLDR: Good quality place, needs a fair better level of communication for 5 Liking the course and the people I've met, it doesn't feel like I'm learning much of anything but I already have personal experience in my field so I do probably outclass what's expected from baseline students of said courses in terms of skill and/or understanding. Some of the communication leaves a lot to be desired, sometimes no communication about certain things. For example, restricted areas where someone threatens to kick you off the course because you entered a building with no warnings or signs indicating only certain lanyards may enter. Or an elevator which is only marked as a staff elevator on one of three floors. Or what to do in the event of something like a fire. These kinda things are crucial for a long term educational place... The enrollment was fairly simple and they were nice at coordinating me where to go but a much more guided introduction to the college rather than a swift tour of a few places, mail, map and misc info would've been greatly preferred, it's a bit difficult to get accustomed in the first month when it feels like they threw you into the deep end while the actual learning is the kids area. Despite the rant, it's held up by its lecturers, fantastic facilities and cool people. Special needs support seems great, bursary fund is a bit hellish to sign up for but works extremely well. Safeguarding is seriously considered and we'll put together
