"Last entry is at 5pm. This 15th century castle is most associated with Patrick Maxwell. He transformed the castle into a fine Renaissance mansion, but was notorious for murdering two neighbours and mistreating his wife."

Absolutely stunning and under rated castle. Must have driven past it a thousand times but never been in. Free parking was the first plus point but the castle itself is beautiful, so much to explore and amazing views from the upper floors. Well placed and informative information points throughout give very interesting and sometimes dark insights into the castles history and really make you think about the events that once happened within the same room you are standing. The manager Billy was fantastic and clearly very passionate about the place and was happy to give a detailed history and have a good chat. Overall a great way to spend an afternoon and made me want to visit other similar sites across the country
It's okay for one time visit but nothing much is there to watch or experience and nothing is there from Maxwell time apart from Castle wall. It will be good if there will be some stuff which they use or had in castle. ..view is very good from it..Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Lovely castle overlooking the water with limited opening hours for the public. I recommend visiting during sunset as you get beautiful views across the mountains and we saw a pair of dolphins jumping out of the water and playing near the pier in the carpark.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Passionate and knowledgeable staff member in the gift shop briefed us before we made our way round the castle. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for historic sites around Glasgow!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Dog walk over to the playing fields. 1st time going right over and also taking the dog, who is a water loving dog so that bit was a bit iffy haha. She loved all the new smells and slept well on the way home. Picture from far end of boardwalk looking back to Port Glasgow with the castle just out of shot on the left. We didn't go into Newark Castle so this is a bit of a pointless review for that, although have been previously a good few years ago and was a good experience back then.

Nice place to walk a bit with beautiful view on the river and hills. The castle is closed, and it is not indicated on Google. It's only open in summer, as stated at the entrance. Free parking places available.

One of the most authentic medieval fortifications I ever seen. It remains stuck in my imigination as a staple of that kind of architecture. The experience was made even more vivid thanks to the lady-guide who immersed me in the world of castles and added stunning details of everyday life of people living in that time.
