Beautiful bridge ..either from the top with fabulous views ., or from underneath where you can picnic and even fish
Great place to walk the kids, pets or just yourself with some beautiful scenery to be enjoyed. The area is rich with history and has great public footpath routes to Barnard Castle, Durham and more. Ten minute walk to Auckland Castle, the rugby club or the town centre.
Love going for a walk across this and taking photos as beautiful here I'd recommend going for a walk on it when in the area
Worth seeing. Park on Lower Bridge Street and you can walk right up underneath it. Very impressive. You can also walk up the very steep and cobbled Bridge Street to walk over it. Bear left and re-cross the river on the lower stone bridge 100m upriver to get back to your car. Half an hour all the way round.
Great use of the disused old railway viaduct that was converted into the new A689 road bridge with great skill in 1995. To bypass the old single lane road bridge and the village of Toronto . One of the landmarks of Bishop Auckland and rightly so
Being under the viaduct there are plenty of walks along the river side. Beautiful stunning scenery.
Beautiful walk along the river wear from the 12th century pack horse bridge worth a visit in itself under the viaduct and up to the edge of the bishops park. Impressive to note that on this side of bishop Auckland there is no urban sprawl. You go straight from countryside into the heart of the town up the hill and into the market place. Gorgeous views of the bishops palace when looking up to the town.
This structure is beautiful and stands approximately 60 feet high and built in 1857. I don’t think it’s given the recognition it deserves to be honest, as to me it stands up against The Glenfinnan Viaduct viaduct on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan. My only reason I’ve given it four stars opposed to five is the graffiti it has on it, and believe that should be removed.
A lovely Grade II listed viaduct over the river Wear with great views of the surrounding area. It stands 100ft high with 11 arches, each 60ft wide. The bridge was originally built in 1857 as a railway viaduct, and was used as such until 1968 when the railway line was closed. In 1972 the bridge was converted into a footpath. In 1995, and at a cost of £4.25m, the viaduct completed another conversion to enable its use by road vehicles after the nearby Bishop Skirlaw Bridge began showing signs of distress from high traffic use. A concrete deck was constructed on top of the viaduct adding a 13ft overhang, the first viaduct conversion of its kind.
Lovely but very sad to see the multiple flowers and memorials left to people who have jumped... Life is too short everything is temporary dont waste it, seek help
