This is a remarkable and historic site in a setting of great natural beauty. You can really feel the presence of the religious communities that lived here. There is an excellent exhibition of the history of the site, but check for opening times before you go if you want to see it. Otherwise, there are good information panels round the site. The Celtic Christians put their monasteries in beautiful but inaccessible places, and it is still not easy to get to along narrow and twisty country roads. May not be suitable for large vehicles such as motor homes, though I have been there in a coach before. Parking is also quite limited. If you are visiting, please respect the natural and spiritual serenity of the site.
Wonderful place there is easy access with out climbing go up tarmac path market private to centre.which is often looked. Gradient but take slow can be managed sit on walls to get breath enjoy tranquility. Religious site, graveyard, schoolhouse , buildings ,sun dial and tower. Use your imagination. Good views to whiterock etc

Beautiful site to visit in golden hour, sun sets beautifully behind the tower. Pretty muddy in winter so wear some boots
There's not a lot of the ruins of the ancient monastery of Nendrum to see, but it's location on Mahee Island in the edge of Strangford Lough is very picturesque and offers excellent scenic views. I occasionally bring a picnic down and just take in the view. It's free to visit, and accessible 24 hours a day offering lots of opportunity and variety. My most recent visit was late at night to do a little star-gazing. The skies overhead being particularly clear, just far enough away from Belfast. Do take in Mahee Castle while in the vicinity, on the top end of the island.
Quite steep walk up to the ruins, had been raining so was quite muddy.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Very interesting historic site near Killyleagh and Comber. The site is well signposted to find and also with interesting facts posted around the site about the workings of the monastery when it was occupied and in use. There are also signs offering information on the different local flora and fauna you can look for at different times of year. Situated atop a hill in an island and connected to the main land peninsula by a narrow road, the site offers fantastic 360° views of the surrounding sea and farmland. There is a small visitor centre tucked away to the side of the site but it was not open when we visited. A very nice way to spend an hour or so.
This place is a hidden gem. You get to travel through some beautiful countryside to get there and when you do... Wow. This is one of my favourite places to visit. The place is steeped in history and the location is just so peaceful and beautiful. There is a little museum there, tucked away in the trees and bushes, which is also well worth a visit. Go and see one of the many beautiful places this country has to offer.
Fall back in time with a visit to this beautiful site, which also has an excellent visitor's center with artifacts, clear explanations of innovations like the tide-powered mill, and a very good shirt film. Worth a ramble; take a brunch or lunch picnic. And he sure to look at the medieval sundial in the site see accompanying photo.
Beautiful site of an old monastic community. The walls and a church gate still survive atop a hill offering wonderful views of the surrounding area. There is a visitor centre which takes you through some of the monastic site's history. Definitely worth a visit!
