National Waterways Museum

About

National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port looks after one of the greatest collections of historic boats in the world. Book online now -Your ticket now allows you to return as many times as you like during the year. The museum is open everyday, 10am-5pm!

Story

With its stunning location on the banks of the Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, extensive in-door displays, boat trips and historic buildings, the museum makes a great family day out in Cheshire, where time slows down and history comes to life.

There's so much to explore from the handsome Victorian buildings, which house the museum's Quality Assured Visitor Attraction Logodisplays, to the locks and moorings vibrant with historic and visiting narrow boats.

Designed by Thomas Telford under the direction of William Jessop, the docks at Ellesmere Port were still in use as late as the 1950s. They were a marvellously self-contained world and when you visit the museum today you can still walk round its locks, docks and warehouses and visit its forge, stables and workers cottages.

Canals are havens for wildlife. Look and listen out for the many birds that live here or travel through - pied wagtails, swans, coots, ducks, cormorants, moor hens - you may even catch sight of a kingfisher or even hear a sky lark!

Nice for a visit! Interesting, Educational and well presented historic site. Up to date AR guide app looks good but only appears to work for I phone user's though.
Lively place. Would live to go back as the place is set on 7 and a half acres and didn't get the chance to see it all. Definitely a place to visit. It is a good place for families with kids.
A lovely day out! We were fortunate to have had good weather when we visited with our 5 year old and baby, so could wander around at our leisure. We all absolutely loved it; so many different boats to see with helpful information on the placards, our eldest loved the engine room especially. Highly recommended!
Love this place and have an annual pass which is great value. Shame it's closed at the moment as the outside space is lovely to walk around and the takeaway coffee very good
Moored up in the basin, free entry at the moment due to the virus. Therefore some exhibits closed. Pleasant staff, lots to learn.
Excellent museum if you're interested in waterways. Free parking, decedent amenities and friendly staff. Also well set up to be Covid safe.
Great little cafe. Limited choice for food at the moment. Very cold in there today. Good covid measures in place.
