We had a lovely visit here, your able to make yourself a hot or cold drink from the facilities provided. Nice to hear about the history of the house, being owned by one of the founders of the National Trust. Great house to look around & the gardens are stunning. Be sure to walk around them.
Absolutely lovely place, everyone so friendly, from the man in the entrance hut who cracked fungi jokes there was a small exhibition, to the staff inside and even the other visitors. I really enjoyed looking around the house, unlike other similar properties there is so much to do - crafts for the kids or adults!, lots of books to read or buy, fantastic views saw a red squirrel!, plus help yourself to a brew and sit beside a roaring fire. I also walked the woodland trail - some of the path is very steep with uneven stone steps so best to take care but it was worth it, had some amazing views. Well worth a visit.
This National Trust property is certainly quite the hidden gem! Onsite parking is limited and reserved for blue-badge holders only, but don't give it a miss; the walk up to the house is scenic and paved the whole way. It only takes about 5-10 minutes up the drive and is so worth it. The house itself is very cozy and laid out as a series of reading nooks with coffee and tea available in the shop. Walks around the grounds are available for every ability level and red squirrels are easy to spot. I particularly loved the kind and knowledgeable volunteers and staff members who look after everything. I'll certainly be back!
Lovely place! Well worth the £5 entry fee, which includes access to the house and grounds, which are completely dog friendly both the grounds and house, which was a nice surprise! as well as free tea and coffee in the house. The grounds include a fab circular walk, well signed with good paths and stunning views of surrounding areas. We were also very lucky to see red squirrels!! There were great activities for kids, both in the grounds and house. The house is an open space, and isn't traditionally restored, but has been used in a really interesting way - people can come and go from room to room, taking seats to view the scenery and, eating theit lunch/snacks, reading and chatting. There is a great activitiy room for kids and adults! It was chalk drawings when we were there you can then pop to the kitchen for complimentary tea and coffee. There is a great second hand book sale as well, which we spent a while browsing through. The volunteers were really helpful and knowledgeable and we really enjoyed the local artists exhibition 'Big Faces'. Well worth a visit!
What a brilliant place to visit for Red Squirrels! It’s £5pp for entry, but so worth it as you can easily spend an hour just sitting and looking at the red squirrels on the feeders. We visited on a wet and quiet Sunday in October, and the day seemed perfect for it. Amazing visit.
What a peaceful place within a short walk from Grasmere village.Beautiful views from the house, love the informal mood inside created by the children activities to making yourself a hot drink and relaxing in the rooms. We will definitely return on our next trip to Grasmere. Thank you to all the staff for making it a friendly and welcoming experience.Sandra,Steve & friends.
Great place for the kids to explore and run around. Good for picnics with lovely addition of deck chairs overlooking Grasmere
Somewhat sparse inside. Brew your own coffee. Use Blue Badge car park to rear of house as, for me it's a bit of a stretch uphill from car parks in village. I expect village can be crowded high season. Quite busy the day I visited in late March. Good range of second hand books. Sat around in easy chairs watching for red squirrel; no luck. Plenty of cafés and galleries in village. Unique history.
Very interesting. Not necessarily worth a special trip to see, but welll worth a visit if you're in Grasmere. Nice artwork, great view over Grasmere and an effortless red squirrel sighting. Friendly, knowledgeable volunteers.
Not impressed. A dry bolt hole after a morning on the fells, certainly nothing to write home about. The Chapel was nice, but that's about it really
