All round family day out. Walking round the beautiful grounds and gardens. Bird watching and red Squirrels. Play area for kids, cafes . Such a beautiful place. If you like birds there is a walk across the wetlands to the Loch with bird hides and a chance to see Ospreys. Threave House was closed when we visited, but we still managed to fill four hours there. It was really good. Highly recommended.
Lovely garden and setting. Very reasonable entry for non-members. The woodlands and walled gardens particular highlights for me. Only slightly tarnished by the massive ride on mowers buzzing about during our entire visit, seemingly without anything to do, which made a lot of noise and made it a bit hard to relax with a toddler who loves exploring. Maybe they could limit the mowers to certain hours? Or at least not have them running all day. Playground: The playground was fun, albeit a bit dilapidated. The fibreglass coos were a big hit, and the setting was lovely.
The gardens provide a lovely backdrop to a pleasant and relaxing day out. Whenever we have visitors we take them here for lunch and of course so they can see the house and gardens. They each comment how they enjoyed their visit. Unfortunately the main cafe is closed for refurbishment but there is a second cafe at the old stables.
The car park is really small and there no overflow and it doesn't take long for the car park to get full. There is no electric charge points. The main reception has a cafe/shop and toilets. Threave house is a short walk up a small hill. Where you will be greeted buy a member of NTS who will ask you if you want information on the person who built/lived in the house or just want to go in and look around. The staff member was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed what he had to say and it only took a few minutes. The house is only open in certain area as it is still in use. It also closes earlier than the gardens. If you have walking issues the stairs maybe a problem. The house has 3 floors. The views from threave house out to the gardens and hill side are stunning. The walled garden is really nice with lots of information as to what has been planted. There is lots of trails that takes you about the garden and through the trees. The play park behind the stables cafe is really small. There is 2 different area for different age groups but they could have made it in to one. The cafe is only open on certain days and there is toilets at back of the cafe but there open everyday till the gardens close. There is lots of benches dotted about as well.
Fantastic day out and great value for money. Gardens are just amazing and you can totally see the amount of work and care that goes in to maintaining them. Also beautiful to see all the wildlife enjoying it too, the bees in this area are have got to be some of the luckiest ever! We spent 2 and a half hours wandering around and will visit again.
A lovely gardens, even in the pouring rain! We loved the glass houses and even saw some illusive Red Squirrels Plenty of parking too. We also did the Estate walk the next day. A lovely walk, plenty to see and very varied but so much flooding. Don't go after a prolonged period of rain!
We both thoroughly enjoyed exploring the garden, seeing the different trees and plants. The views were equally stunning, well worth visiting, we plan to visit at different times of the year. The small guide was in valuable. We didn't visit the house this time but have previously enjoyed it. The restaurant was okay, you could sit in or outside. But equally tables and chairs were dotted around the gardens to sit eat and enjoy if you so wished. Would happily recommend just for the tranquillity.
Wonderful place to visit. The azaleas and rhodedendrons are in full bloom now. The cafe has been moved lower down the garden due to refurbishment of the main building. There is a shop and small plant centre on site.
Had a lovely sunny September day. Sadly didn't have time to see everything, but loved all the little paths that went through the planted areas so you can get really close to everything. We had enormous fun playing on the cows! Some of the mature trees are exceptional examples. I am a very big tree fan. The walled garden and greenhouse was also very interesting, I think we all went home thinking, 'can I do that in my garden' about several things we had seen. Highly recommended. Playground: Brilliant for children of all ages. I am 50. Loved the cows. Restrooms: Only visited the stables cafe toilet. Seemed clean enough but we were there before the coach parties arrived.
Nice visit, car park seems small and struggled to find a parking spot. Loads of daffodils to see, enjoyed the woodland walk and managed to see some red squirrels. Serves nice coffee in a modern cafe
