I have always loved Mackintosh and his wife's designs so it was on my bucket list to visit The Hill House. My visit was everything I hoped and more. The staff at the house were lovely, friendly and knowledgeable. It was so interesting being able to walk around the outside of the house while they dry it out. It is very cold inside the house so wrap up warm .The scones in the cafe the best I have tasted for ages.
A superb visit to The Hill House. Great to have a walk around and take in the stunning decor and architecture. The staff here are super friendly and we managed to stay for two really interesting talks. The gift shop is fantastic and the cafe is a wonderful place to stop for lunch! I highly recommend the Macintosh inspires biscuits
This is an impressive restoration and Macintosh exhibit. The effort and care involved in enclosing the house as part of the restoration has provided a number of additional benefits. Now the weather is not an issue while visiting, walkways up and around the house allow new views, plus the incorporated café, gift shop and deck all add to the visit. Well done Scotland looking after the Macintosh legacy, an easy 5 star rating.
Informative staff bring to life an amazing building and art museum. The detail is incredible. Has a nice wee cafe and good parking. Disabled access not great unfortunatelyVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Amazing place. I visited the Hill House with my friend, we both are architects focusing on heritage and monument preservation. It's an interesting example of a conservation approach. We also had a very tasty soup, coffee and cake there. Stuff is kind and helpful. I have nothing to rebuke. Exhibition inside is cleverly organised. To see the house from outside is a unique experience. I definitely enjoyed the trip here and to Helensburgh. Highly recommend!
If you’re an architecture/ history lover, you have to visit the hill house, a masterpiece designed by Mackintosh. The house itself is absolutely amazing, from the delicate wood work to the high back chairs, from the lamp shade to the stained glass, it’s full of details and uniqueness! The staff there are super friendly and helpful, the food & drink in the cafe is very nice as well. It will be interesting to see the next step on this house, and hopefully see it without the steel frame in the next ten years.
Fascinating to walk round another Mackintosh masterpiece. Great to see it from an alternative view with the box walkways over the building. Parking was plentiful, cafe looked nice with a roof terrace. Can imagine the surrounding gardens would be lovely in the summer.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The car park is located at the top of the road past the entrance to The Hill House and it's a good size. The main entrance has the shop, toilets and a lift that takes you to the first floor where there is the cafe. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the Blackie Family who had the house built. There is a short video about Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his connection to the house and how after the house was completed he and his wife remained friends with Mr and Mrs Blackie. The rooms are laid out the way the family had them when they stayed here and there are pictures that were taken at the time. The box round the outside does hinder your views out the window looking at the coast and surrounding area. The box does have a party trick...Where you can if you're not scared of heights, walk over the top of the house. It's pretty spectacular as you look down on the building and almost feel like you could touch the roof. The walk way takes you all round the outside of the house. The grounds are easy to walk around and there is benches so you can have a seat. There is some picnic benches located round the gardens as well.
We throughly enjoyed visiting The Hill House. Loved walking up.the scaffolding and seeing over the house It's well worth a visit the house has been well preserved. The staff were great and very knowledgeable. The cafe was worth a visit too. Definitely will be back again
A very interesting visit around the house, with good information boards and a unique experience. Whilst the protective mesh is round you get a fantastic view above the house from the walkway. Staff were the best! So friendly and helpful, every one. Just be aware that it can be very chilly in the house so make sure you have some warmer clothes. Cafe also excellent.
