Museum of Comedy

About

An immersive, fun museum and performance space featuring iconic props and artefacts from our rich comedic history.

Story

Founded by Leicester Square Theatre director Martin Witts, the Museum of Comedy is a brand new, immersive museum and performance venue, featuring iconic props and artefacts from our rich comedic history and housing one of the most comprehensive collections of Comedy memorabilia ever to be amassed in one place.

The museum has been lovingly put together by Martin from his collection of over six thousand artefacts and print from some the most iconic comedians and comedy shows both past and present, amassed during his career spanning over three decades in the comedy industry.

See comic artefacts from Tommy Cooper’s handmade magic props to Steptoe and Son’s stuffed bear! Plus Leicester Square Theatre favourite Bill Bailey’s iconic 6-neck guitar.

Accompanying the collection will be revolving exhibitions, currently Steve Ullathorne’s stylish and contemporary images of current comedy stars The Comic Collection.

Museum facilities include The Cooper Room, a state of the art traditional performance space hosting all kinds of comedy performance, from theatre and stand up to silent film. The Museum is also home to The Comedy Academy, an educational facility for comedy writing performance and production.

The Museum of Comedy. Shining a light on the stars of British comedy.

Nice enough venue and intimate performance space where many great comedy performers have cut their teeth and honed their craft. As a museum it’s terrible. No storytelling with the limited number of poorly displayed artifacts. Meaningless books laying around the place. Saw a decent enough show there but was disappointed with the museum element. None of the other attendees were engaging with any of the exhibits either. The venue needs to change its name as museum is misleading
Hard to review a venue without reviewing the show you saw there. We saw Marcus Ryan, and although we have seen him before, this show was superb! The best we've seen. Funny and emotional. The venue handled the crowd well and though there was quite a queue at the bar, it was served quickly.
Very interesting place. We were there for a private party with use of the bar bar staff very quick, professional and friendly. The venue was laid out with lots of small areas, old church pews and quaint seating and so much memorabilia to examine - both on the walls and in cabinets and displays. Lots of posters of great comedians, books, nik-naks, larger ornaments and models. On a slightly negative side, perhaps, the venue is a little dark and is perhaps a little small for big parties, because of the layout check recommended numbers with the venue. It's definitely different and makes for an interesting place to visit. Nearest tube: Holborn
Museum? Not at all. This is a cabaret, pure and simple, with a bar. Never was and never will be a museum. Naming this place a 'museum' probably made it more palatable to the local authority licensing committee. For shame on the Church of England that an historic Hawksmoor church can house a cabaret in the crypt.
One of the hidden gems, we had such a fun time at the Eastern European Comedy Festival. I didn't have a clue that something like this is actually going on. The comedy museum is very cute, they have a little bar, the stage is very intimate and the performances superb! You are a part of the show and that's wonderful!
Lovely found after 10 years never really knew it existed ... . Cool I check out your program and also ur location which might need a nice 360 from a nice creative collaboration
Wonderful place. Lovely cozy mini museum underneath the big one, with a wealth of unique comedy artefacts and history, regularly putting on some of the best comedians to be seen in an intimate 50 person? room. Lovely bar, too, and the staff are wonderful people. Can't recommend more.
I am totally biased about this venue, as I have just performed in cabaret there! The staff and management were very helpful in my securing an evening there, and all acts and booking links are advertised online through the Leicester Square Theatre organisation. There is a marvelous cosy bar with tables, and the main room can also be laid out as a cabaret room, or with rows of seats. The foyers are brightly decorated with posters and photos of famous comedians as well as the fascinating history of St George's-- the Museum is located in the roomy crypt. The bar remained open until 11 on my evening, and I would enjoy coming back to see some of the stand-up comics who strut their stuff here. At a dirt-cheap price for admission! Rex in the City
It is a quirky place that is an ideal venue to hold comedy events. The staff were polite and courteous. It holds a goldmine of comedy material. We went to see Marina Joy and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Look around, it might be open but it is venue more than anything else. Sure, there are good shows. 18+ is age limit. Leave yougsters behind the door. Beacause they are not clever enough to understand us. Or because they are.
