Mull Aquarium

About

Europe's first catch and release aquarium

Story

As a catch and release aquarium, our animals are brought to us by creel fishermen, divers and beachgoers and then released back into the wild after 4 weeks! This means that we are able to provide a valuable educational experience without impacting the local marine environment.

Our touch pool demonstrations allow visitors of all ages to get their hands wet and interact with the weird and wonderful species found locally.

Mull Aquarium is part of the Tobermory Harbour Association, a not-for-profit community company.

Lovely afternoon here, lots of new residents to the "aquarium hotel" daily. You can go back as much as you like during the day. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and friendly guides.

This small aquarium is ever changing, with locally caught sea creatures which are released back into the wild after a short stay. The touch pool sessions were the highlight, great for kids. Staff seemed really knowledgeable, and enthusiastic and were able to answer all our questions.

Although the aquarium is only small, it packs plenty in. All the marine animals are from the local area and are returned to the sea after a month or so. I think that is a great way to run an aquarium! It is good for kids too as they have regular "hand on" session where staff talk about the wildlife and kids (and adults!) get a chance to touch and hold the various marine beasties! The was also an expo about plankton with a local expert who was showing all the tiny zooplankton in a water sample using a microscope. Very interesting.

This place is a little gem tucked away in the harbour building in Tobermory. It's not a big place but the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. There is usually something extra going on and if you take time to read the wealth of information around the place then you'll come away with much better understanding of the diversity of life in our local waters. The highlight is undoubtedly the touchpool sessions, they happen hourly in high season.

Very keen on the catch and release policy and wanted to love this place but left feeling rather disappointed. Poor layout, tired displays and not an awful lot of marine life to see that you wouldn't find in any seashore rock pool. One exception was an embarrassed looking octopus; hiding and no doubt counting the days till freedom.
