Mount St Bernard Abbey

Story

Mount St Bernard Abbey is a Roman Catholic (Cistercian) monastery of the Strict Observance (Trappists) near Coalville in Leicestershire, England, formerly in the parish of Whitwick and now of that in Charley, in Charnwood Forest, founded in 1835. The abbey has the distinction of being the first permanent monastery to be founded in England since the Reformation and is the only Cistercian house in England.BackgroundThe early history of Mount Saint Bernard Abbey is inextricably linked with an earlier, short-lived foundation of Cistercian monks in Lulworth, Dorset and the Abbey of Mount Melleray in Ireland. Following the suppression of monasteries in France, a small colony of dispossessed Cistercian monks had arrived in London in 1794, with the intention of moving on to found a monastery in Canada. Their plight came to the attention of Thomas Weld of Lulworth Castle, Dorset, a Catholic convert and philanthropist who distinguished himself in relieving the misfortunes of refugees of the French Revolution and who then provided them with land on which to establish a monastic community on his estate in East Lulworth.

A peaceful place! You can come here with your family for relaxation. Mount St. Bernard Abbey is a Roman Catholic Trappist monastery founded in 1835. The abbey was the first permanent monastery to be founded in England since the Reformation and is the sole Trappist house in England. The church was consecrated on 20 August 1844, the feast day of Saint Bernard, but was to remain unfinished for more than ninety years. Charles Dickens  is reputed to have spent some time in retreat at the abbey, though he is not enumerated amongst the list of celebrated visitors in the monastery's 'Brief Historical Sketch'.
Very peaceful place, feeling of serenity standing looking at surroundings. 1 st vist after being recommended by a total stranger . Well worth the visit beautiful landscaped place , some areas are quite hard to climb , but we'll with the effort.
Lovely peaceful place. The grounds are beautifully kept. The gift shop has a mixture of things made at the Abbey and traditional Catholic religious items.
Location is phenomenal! Beautiful scenery. Church is beautiful. Confession is at 1430 every day. Mass is at 0800, and you are able to receive communion. Gift shop opens at 1000 and they have a massive selection of books! The monastery makes their own beer and honey, which is available for purchase. Scenic trails are around the monastery, making great contemplation routes. Would love to come back, I believe you can stay the night.
Lovely place to visit, you can park in the Abbey car park, please donate to the upkeep of the car park, lots of lovely walks around the abbey, quarry, local woods and reservoir. There is a really nice gift shop and tea rooms. Visit the website for more information.
Beautiful, relaxing, pretty! Lovely place to have a walk and clear your mind. I'm not religious at all but it's so quiet and peaceful
This place is outstanding and leaves me with a feeling I cannot even describe..! And I'm not even religious The honey and home made beer is fantastic. I highly recommend going into the shop!
Great gardens to walk around and a really impressive old granite building. I would recommend taking the cavalry walk, as the views from the top are impressive. The beer that is brewed by the monks is incredible and can be bought from the small shop on site. The shop is closed on Sundays.
Yet another work of art by the one and only A W Pugin . Over the years it has witnessed the foot fall of many of the good and the great with many complementary words written and said about it . The morning I visited it was my definition of peace on Earth it would be easy to forget all the World's troubles here . It is the sole Trappist Monastery in England and its Monks brew and sell Trappist beer hooray . Their name Trappist comes from the monk's of the ' Cistercians of the Strict Observance' from La Trappe after the French Revolution . The present building replaced an earlier one by William Railton who also designed Nelsons Column . Florence Nightingale and William Wordsworth are just a few of its eminent visitors . The Calvary Monument is worth the trip here to see alone without all else that is on offer . It is quite beautiful with a clear blue sky behind it . You will find the Chapel of Dolours about half way down the hill . You will also notice lots of touching memorials to deceased people left along the route as well as in the Chapel . May they all rest in peace . I personally attended prayers by the Monk's which they carry out seven times a day . It is quite easy to be attracted to this life with all the turmoil in the world today . I believe they pray for everyone in it . I loved it here peaceful , tranquil and beautiful . I wish my mother could have visited here she would have loved it also . Her favourite place was Lourdes a place I have never visited but my trip here made me wish to . Just to give away my non saintly status the Trappist beer is called 'Tynt Meadow' and is 7.4% ABV . WOO HOO
Stunning Abbey and grounds with a lovely little shop too. We keep coming back to the Abbey both to walk the grounds and to pick up a couple of bottles of the Monks trappist ale,t hat is made on the grounds - it's fantastic.
