Mount Grace Priory
"England's most important, best preserved and most accessible of the ten medieval Carthusian houses charterhouses in England. The individual cells reflect the isolation of the monks who live as hermits, each occupying his own cell and coming together in the chapel only for the nocturnal liturgical hours, Sundays and feast-days. They are silent order, and their diet is strictly vegetarian.Entrance is via 13th-century manor house containing an exhibition and two newly restored arts and crafts rooms.During your visit, enjoy locally sourced food from the Orchard Café.Please note: Mount Grace Priory is operated by English Heritage. What an amazing day we've had at Mount Grace Priory. The site is absolutely stunning. The house, monk's cell and the ruins with an orchard to the back and stunning gardens to the front of the site. Beautiful views all the way round. You wouldn't believe such an amazing, relaxing place is hiding away just 1 minute of A19 I was shocked. The whole site is safe for children of all ages. Lovely day out and extremely nice staff and if you're an English heritage member the parking on site is free. We've arrived just after 10am and the car park was almost empty when we were leaving after 1pm it was very full so if you can pick any time to visit I'd recommend going in the morning rather than later.
Mount Grace is a part of English Heritage. It is a really nice place to visit. The history of the priory is really interesting. It tells you about the monks that use to live there. When at first I was told about the cells, I was surprised after I saw houses that were called cells, they were huge. The ruins are worth seeing. When you are there ask about old grave yard where monks use to be buried, you don’t want to walk over their graves. If you are visiting when it is raining, don’t forget to take wellies with you as you will get muddy. Lovely place to visit with nice little garden. There is also a small restaurant on site where you can have a snack.
Lovely place to visit if you are in the area. Take a picnic and sit in the grounds while the kids run around and explore the ruins. Cafe has indoor and outdoor seating area. Dog friendly but you cant take them in the main house or the recreation of the Monks House. Nice ponds and garden to walk around English Heritage members get in for free.
Such a beautiful spot just off A19 Super friendly and knowledgeable staff made our visit a very pleasant one. Set in the foot of the Cleveland hills it's spectacular on a warm summers day. Great tea room with lots of choices and delicious food.We also came away with some plants and a garden ornament. Would recommend, also there is a 10% discount for membership holders in the gift shop and tea room.
Great EH place . Not a huge amount of car parking as I found out. There is a cafe , shop and toilets on site. The priory and ruins are great but the gardens tip this over into being exceptional. We'll worth a visit
Beautiful gardens with lovely flowers and very interesting priory ruins especially the little monks " cell". Lots of extra info about carthesian origins and habits on QR code with the phone. Free for National trust members but £3 for parking. Completely free for English heritage members. Need about 2 hours to enjoy fully.
English heritage place. Lovely place with a art and craft manor house, not huge but with lovely little gems. The ruin of the Carthusian priory are nice too, one of the cell has been reconstructed to give the visitor an idea of the life of a monk at the priory. The gardens are nice too. Well worth the visit. Nice little cafe as well.
Great place to visit , That is situated just off the A19. The car park is not very big and just a couple of minutes from the house. The grounds are beautifully kept and the house is reallyinteresting and beautiful. There is also a little cafe between the house and car park. Not really wheel chair friendly in the house or gardens.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot sure
Lovely couple of hours walking around the priory and gardens. We didn't have time on this visit to enjoy looking round the house so can do that next time. Really tranquil gardens and lake with swans, geese and ducks to watch. Garden beautifully planted. Priory ruins interesting and peaceful.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
An absolute gem of a place, easy to get to on A19, photographers and history geek heaven. Wonderful site and a place I've always wanted to visit...and it did not disappoint. We spent a couple of hours here and took a picnic, refreshments were reasonably priced too.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
