Incredibly disappointing. I'm not one to leave bad reviews as I would hate to impact a family business negatively but this was so bad I had to let you know. Ordered a large haddock and chips with a large "Irish" curry sauce. £9 for the fish supper and £2.35 for the curry sauce. A little expensive but if it's great then it's a nice treat for a Friday lunchtime. It was anything but great. A 15 minute wait outside the shop whilst they cooked it fresh. No major issues there but if you're in a hurry don't go here. The fish, as you can see from the picture, would not fall into the "large" category for me. Where I am from a "large fish supper" comprises of 2 large fish in the supper and is around £2 cheaper too. Not one fish butterflied so it looks bigger. It tasted ok, not the freshest fish I've ever had but it was ok. The batter was crisp but fell to pieces when trying to eat it. The chips were simply awful. They were absolutely not freshly made and were clearly reheated. They were borderline chewy and completely tasteless. The majority of those are now in the bin of the local Tesco car park. I will never understand how a chip shop can get chips so badly wrong. The curry sauce was lovely and if this is made on site then kudos to you. All in all it was an overly expensive disaster of a fish supper, failing in every area. I'm in the area often but certainly won't be returning here for any future Friday treats. Must do better.
Hands down the best chippy I have ever been to! I was on a tour of the UK and this chippy came highly recommended and definitely DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I tried the fish and chips and I was BLOWN away! The taste was incredible! The chips were salted perfectly and the fish was to die for! So soft and fluffy inside and the batter was delicious! Absolutely would recommend coming here if you are in the area especially if Craig is working! He did everything to perfection and was so lovely and friendly!! 10/10 would recommend!
Food was tasty but a little greasy and absolutely no salt and vinegar as ordered. Disappointingly we were told we had to wait outside with a buzzer whilst the food was cooked, despite there being no shelter and it was pouring with rain so we got soaked. This shop thinks it is something it is not, and riding on the coat tails of winning an award.
I'll start by saying that I would go back if in the area and desperate for a fish and chips fix. The batter is nice, thin and crispy .. tick The chips are again generally crispy.. tick The fish is ok, but the usual offering locally of far too thin fillets.. I manage to find proper sized haddock relatively locally to cook myself, why can't the fish and chip shops? Staff need a right good shake up. None of them ever look happy to be there and transfer their own misery into poor customer service. This has always been the case with this place. On several occasions I have walked out before I started voicing my opinion of how they deal front of house. No urgency, no awareness of needs from the customer in front of them. Why oh why would a busy fish shop not have fish ready? I understand that you don't want fish sat cooked in the range top for half an hour, but you know you have busy times. Have some product ready. I questioned this once before walking out, but again got nothing back that made sense. Another time I was told I was not allowed to put my own salt and vinegar on. It's tucked away behind the counter. I did get into it that time. "Are you worried I might take too many grains of salt and a splash too much vinegar.. you don't know how I like my food... etc etc" Apparently it is a health and safety issue . I said "do you think I am going to squirt it in someone's eyes" this was another time I walked out with some customers behind me giving me the thumbs up and some just mortified that this daft Yorkshire man had felt he had to have an opinion I did say I wouldn't go back after that the staff were probably hoping the same I left it a year or 2... Again the food is definitely more than edible, certainly not brilliant, but the whole set up just niggles me. Staff certainly not any happier or useful. They rest on laurels they believe awards give them. Awards are only won because you bothered to enter. If your product and service is top notch then the only thing you need is happy customers telling everyone else.
We had a holiday let close by so choose to order a delivery in advance of our arrival Ordering was easy online , good menu and very reasonable prices - delivery was perfectly on time and food steaming hot. Lovely fish and scampi and order was exactly as we ordered All in all fantastic service with a quality product well definitely use again when in the area
Ordered chips cheese and kabab meat. I got home had 1 bit of that kabab meat and could not eat it what so ever. I love kabab meat first time in having it from here and that was not kabab meat! Never again. Someone suggested it was micro kabab meat absolutely disgusting
First time visit to this chippy and it was amazing I was in around 6pm and I was served by a lovely young lady called Ellis, she was very helpful and answered all my question, I had a wee fish supper with mushy peas with salt and vinegar was a 10/10 everything was on point I will be 100% be back all 3 off the young lady's was very helpful and lovely xx
They are perhaps the best in Castle Douglas. We ordered fish & chips in two different types that they offer and found them very well cooked. It's a take away so we had to sit in our car to eat our fish & chips. The girl at the desk was very helping and explained various products to us in detail. Would go there again whenever in Castle Douglas.
Best chips I've had! Very generous portions and crisp and warm. Will definitely go back if I am in the area again.
Used to love coming down to castle Douglas for a lovely chippy and ice cream afterwards but after today I wont be back, the chips were obviously frozen chips as they were disgustingly greasy small and crispy, just so different than what they used to be. And the macaroni was definitely frozen from a packet of some sort, it was dry and plastic like, it had bits of meat throughout it and in my opinion it just tasted like burnt bacon
