basically there is nothing to see, the castle is fenced and for sale, only the entrance gate attracts attention
Fascinating building constructed in 1636, a genuine old castle in very good condition. Locked up, no public access, but you can walk around the outside. No grounds - they've been built on. Someone got permission to convert into luxury apartments, fitted double glazed windows and a good roof, cleared inside and then abandoned the project. In 2020 and in early 2021 it is offered for sale as is for €800,000.
This castle dates back to 17th century. It had been partially destroyed by a fire. It was renovated in recent years and now it is a simple property for sale. Bit sad that local council didn't show any interest in this historical building. You can find much more details online. I usually pass by here by bicycle, and I soon notice it could have been well more "considered" by the authorities. Chance missed. Pity.

Partially restored as private residential accommodation Anastacia Archdeacon built it c1656 as a surprise gift for her husband John while he was away fighting for King Philip in the Spanish Wars. Legend has it that when he sailed up Cork harbour and saw the castle he thought it had been built by an enemy and fired at it. Luckily only one cannonball hit the battlements causing little damage. From 1908 to 1971 Monkstown Golf Club owned the castle which it used as it's clubhouse. It is now owned privately and has been partially renovated as residential accommodation. I honestly didn't know what to expect when I made my way here as I have previously heard nothing about the place. I was a little disappointed that there is no access and it is up for sale. Still a nice trip out none the less and some very friendly locals.
Castle is up for sale! Sadly in state of decline - was once a beautiful building but no longer accessible.
Great golf course played back sticks today different ball game.
The castle although unfinished stands proud overlooking the lower Cork Harbour. It is also the emblem for Monkstown Golf Club.
Monkstown castle is a beautiful looking castle. The area is lovely for a walk
