St. Mary's & St. Michael's is a truly magnificent church in an evocative setting, separated from The Stour riverfront only by the paddocks at Mistley Place Park. The neo-gothic, acute spire of St. Mary & St. Michael's stands out impressively from afar as a navigation landmark, even when viewed from the opposite side of the River in Cattawade/Brantham, Suffolk. The interior of the church is also beautifully proportioned & decorated, displaying some intricate stained glass windows. There's an interesting wall plaque dedicated to Thomas Fuller, a Protestant martyr burnt at the stake in 1555. There's another plaque celebrating the life of Thomas Tusser, the influential farmer & horticultural theorist, who's regarded as a father of the smallholding movement. However, he farmed across the border in Cattawade, Suffolk, so it's surprising that the memorial isn't sited in Brantham church, much closer to his plot of land. The separate cemetery is also a tranquil area with some interesting gravestones & a beautifully carved angel. Simply a heavenly place, where rabbits run around nibbling at the grass in the evenings. It's named after two Saints because it was built to replace more than one nearby demolished churches. St. Michael's in Manningtree High Street, eventually pulled down in 1965; & both St. Mary's; the one at Mistley Heath, & the one now known as Mistley Towers, at the end of the road by the sea wall.
this is the best, lovely, beautiful church, its a must visit
This Church is only a short walk from Mistley Towers.
Very pretty church and unlike the light outside that illuminates it. Makes it stand out
Just a shame nowhere to put dead flowers /rubbish etc .People cannot be expected to take their rubbish home especially older people and people who walk down to the churchyard consequently rubbish is being dumped everywhere !! Nobody seems to care !!
Really enjoyed looking over this lovely church
Great views great place for families to walk
Beautiful church set in beautiful countryside.
I was invited to an enterment of a friend who passed
