Ten out of ten fantastic fish and chips light crispy batter with perfectly cooked chips. See my photos. Really impressed with the taste and with the price! This is the best value cod and chips for miles around. Also tried the spam fritters and sausages plus the Chinese curry sauce. Great food at great prices and wonderful polite service. Mermaid Fisheries is spotlessly clean. Prices are excellent. And everything was very well wrapped. Has the bonus of a park opposite where you can sit and enjoy your food. Lots of flower beds and bins for wrappers. Can highly reccommend Mermaid Fisheries.ten out of ten! Parking: Parking right putside.
By the time we got home we had grease dripping out the bag! It set on the table, not talking a bit, there were pools! What papers they'd put on were nearly all greasy and transparent no longer white. Fish in one clump, doesn't flake, all the batter was left on the paper when unwrapped. Pie cold - unsurprisingly, since it was half out the paper it was so poorly wrapped. Very disappoiting after it being so good under previous management. I guess you could say one bonus is they give ve good portions but I'd much rather go back to quality over quantity! Staff friendly, and prices same as anywhere else, looks smart after the refurbishment.
The only thing that has improved about Mermaids under new management is the long queues outside, but even that's starting to creep back into the fold. But that isn't the main reason why I've come to unload on a review. Soon as you get the fish and chips it's cold, Haddock batter broken and stuck to the paper, lack of fish inside the batter and worst of all its undercooked or its being bought from poor quality places for cost cutting measures however I've made my own conclusions and its a combination of both. Even the chips have been ruined and lack some Bonne Appetite vibes, so much for the whole refurbishment because its not like the chippie has got any bigger and still isn't enough room to queue on the pavement which is dangerous because it extends out on the road. To top it all off I got a bad stomach, so there is a general warning to anyone new customer who might want to pop in and have a spot of mild food poisoning or salmonella if you're lucky . Looks like that's another write off in Horncastle. Off to Cleethorpes Papa John's instead.

Updating my review from four stars to five stars, they've only gone and started serving saveloy, they are battered but it's a start. Well done. Great service, great food, it can get busy so be prepared to queue at peak times. I would have given it a five star rating, but I'm originally from London, don't hold that against me so I am quite fond of a saveloy, which they don't serve, but it's still a top notch fish and chip shop.
Been using mermaid fisheries for years and I went there tonight since its refurbishment or should I new owners as there were none of the old staff to be seen. The young staff were not very pleasant, service slow and this was not on a busy night, when I was given my food, it was left on the front of the count and was told there you go, when I asked for a bag for them, I was told it was 20p which I was not told or offered one at the start of me ordering. Even when we said we had not realise and we only had card to buy a bag they just stood there with a blank on their faces, ended up leaving carrying my order in my hands. The food was not very warm when I got back home, we only live less than 5 mins away. I will definitely wont be returning or recommending them to anyone.
