Room was comfortable with immaculate bedding. Bathroom gleaming with fixed toiletries. Also had ironing board, iron, hairdryer and fridge, tea and coffee maker. Staff friendly and breakfast was buffet style and superb. Amazing choice of hot and cold food. Yes, carpet under desk was a bit threadbare, but you must “look at the flowers and not the broken fence!!” Great central location. Hotel car park nearby around the corner.
The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. The room was lovely we stayed in the old part of the hotel with lovely beams. we were surprised to find air conditioning which was great as it was very warm weather, also a fridge, iron & ironing board. Breakfast was nice though the eggs being kept under heated lamps dried up would have preferred cooked to odder. we felt that the carparking was way to expensive at £15 for an overnight stay. however over all it was a lovely stay. Walkability: some areas are less accessible than others, though the staff checked with us that we were gappy to do stairs etc beforehand
This hotel is rather a mixed bag. On the positive side it is very conveniently situated in the centre of town in a beautiful old black and white timbered building. Our bedroom was clean and quiet and the bed comfortable. The breakfast was fine. The price we paid was reasonable However, the hotel has a forlorn, neglected air about it. The place really does need a thorough clean in the public areas and refurbishment everywhere. The dim light in front of the lift was absolutely filthy, the walls are grubby, paint is chipped off the skirting boards, door frames and doors, the carpet under the dressing table in our room was literally moth eaten. The public bar and lounge are dark, dingy and dated and not at all inviting. It is such a shame as this should and could be a wonderful place to stay. Mercure, please invest in it.
Stayed a night because I wasn’t happy with my hotel so changed because Mercure never disappoint me. Best service, comfortable rooms, quiet and romantic atmosphere and more nice facilities. On top of the building was quite interesting.Rooms: 5/5
This hotel is a lovely old building and is very atmospheric because of its heritage work on the building has to be worked on by craftsman. Our room the window was rotten and needs fixing and the secondary glazing is very old and not the best. From our window I could see a window hanging off its hinges from another room. Carpet has a few holes in it , bed is massive, you get cooler and tea and coffee making facilities. No hairdryer in our room and no tissues. Complementary water for first night nothing after that. Breakfast is excellent and a beautiful setting. The hotel is perfectly placed for all restaurants and shops and very close to the RSC. £15 a night to park on the car park. Would highly recommend this place and the rooms have to fit around the history of the building.
On entering the reception is very dark and uninviting. Staff were pleasant. Room 103 was very poor still dirty and window frames rotting not nice at all,we complained and got put in 105 slightly dated but better. Bar staff was great and breakfast team were welcoming the breakfast was good as well. A nice central location but hotel needs a lot of cosmetic work needed.
Really good location, breakfast was lovely, but that is where the positive comments end. No care given to the hotel, found out it’s been bought out and due to close as of November and this was very noticeable. It was disgustingly dirty, cobwebs everywhere, dust galore, couldn’t see out of the windows they were that dirty. Carpets looked like they’d not been hoovered since the day it opened. Dirty bowl sat at the bottom of the stairs the day with arrived and still sat there when we left 2 days later!! Rooms: Disgustingly dirty
Beautiful historic hotel, however few disappointments! Bar area very disappointing, small dingey and hardly ever seems open!. Reception area, doesn't always seem manned, not always friendly, except a lovely guy called Tristan honestly he couldn't do enough, really nice guy! Room old and dated, as it should be, however TV is a hit and miss to whether it works, we always stay in the haunted room has a lovely feel about it, bed is the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in! , However cold Tap doesn't work well in the bathroom!. Apart from that, there's no issues. Breakfast, come on guys get with the hygiene, on entrance I seen small flies flying under the light, above bacon. Beans , mushroom, and hash browns, luckily I don't eat any other that stuff, so ordered a fresh poached egg. Cut into it, completely snotty! The scrambled egg, absolutely stunk, most probably been over cooked! We've heard it's having a refurbishment, please address the breakfast, everything needs to be covered over, it's all left out, I don't pay good money out, to have flies. And peoples germs on my food!. Breakfast is the biggest disappointment for me!. However the ladies that do breakfast , are a Credit to you, I hope you have them all back!. Honestly we will be back after the refurbishment, we love the history of this hotel, it has the ability to be stunning!. It just feels a little unloved and understaffed right now!. Looking forward to staying after it reopens!.
Nice hotel. Very old timy but that's ehat you expect. 15 a night car parking is a bit steep but then it is a busy place. The room had signs of ware but also had air con. The TV had no sound but at least I got to have a go at commentating my own football match. The service I only spoke to two people and they were nice. We wanted beams and got beams another lifes ambition ticked off the list. The bed was comfy and the cover nice and thick, it was pleasant and that's all you need for a night
Sadly disappointing The beds were comfortable. We had the best night sleep and the room was so clean. However, there were many issues with our stay. The tv needed instructions that were not provided and I only found at reception by chance. The phone in the room did not work and when I went to reception to report it, they did not care. I also asked about the restaurant and booking a table but apparently there isn’t one despite all the advertisements. The receptionist said I could order room service even though I just told her that the phone does not work. The QR codes in the room for health and safety, general information and the mysterious restaurant did not work. There is also a bar that is supposed to be open past 11pm for residents of the hotel. But it closed at 11 and you had to order drinks at reception or via room service. We had no working phone though and reception was constantly left unattended. My friend is a manager for a hotel and knows that no one should leave reception unattended. The breakfast luckily did exist and was delicious. It was overall deeply disappointed as my friend knows the hotel could be ran better. The lack of information, bad service and just general attitude towards guests ruined the experience. It’s a shame considering it’s a well established hotel. We can only hope that one day the restaurant will appear with working phones and visible staff. To be or not to be, that is the question! Lovely beds though Food & drinks: Restaurant disappeared
