Just to point out a lot of comments in this section are referring to the novel coffee/book store next door, which i believe is seperate?
Nice coffee and sandwich, cakes to die for and all in a good cause. The selection of books for sale seems never ending and I know that on a Tuesday afternoon they is a woman who teaches Knitting and crochet. Very nice place to visit and parking just across the road.
Great place, really friendly and helpful staff and such a great cause. They have function room upstairs which they sometimes hire out for small gatherings with great food and drinks available. Thank you
The charity shop has an often interesting but variable selection. Great prices & well worth regular visits. The 2nd hand book store now is also a tea shop, nice cakes, good coffee & great selection of books that changes regularly.
Lovely place to grab a cup of tea or coffee. The coffee was delicious, of course I had soy milk and not charged extra for the privilege like some archaic local establishments, Utopia, Birdwood. Lots of books, CD's, vinyl to browse and purchase, raising vital funds for Mencap. The service is excellent with a lovely warm welcome, friendly staff and very attentive to cleanliness and clear tables, thanks Daniel Now my coffee shop of choice so thanks to all involved. Vegan options are available and those that like real homemade cakes not sure if any are vegan then visit as you will not be disappointed.
I would like to start this review by stating that I am full of respect and admiration towards people who devote their free time for such a good cause by working for charity. However, this doesn't extend to the frankly rude women in this shop; I don't know whether they are regulars but for the sake of any new/future customers I hope not. My partner and I were browsing in a certain section minding our own business when they would blatantly talk about customers in their shop and not in a nice way either, since I actually heard what they were saying about us. We ignored the comments albeit with difficulty since it was upsetting and finally found what we were looking for and went to pay and got out of there but feeling very angry that we didn't do anything to warrant such behaviour and yet we still received this negative treatment - particularly from people who are supposedly working for a good cause, and considering that people go in there to give to the charity that they volunteer for; I'm shocked that in comparison to the glowing reviews I've seen that they have dropped this far because there's no more welcoming or friendly people in Southend Mencap anymore. Will not be returning and certainly do not recommend to anyone.
Doing a great work for the area and not just those with special needs but the parents and families of these people. Thank you all and keep up the good works.
Lovely bookshop cafe. So well set out and coffee and cakes all delicious!
