Patrick Stirling, then Writer in Dunblane was born 24th November 1743. He had a nephew, William Stirling, also a Writer in Dunblane born 2nd June 1761. Thereafter came Patrick James Stirling, who was a nephew of William Stirling, born 13th July 1809. Dr Stirling subsequently assumed as a Partner, Joseph McLean, and the firm was known for many years as Stirling & McLean. Joseph McLean died 2nd November 1872 and at that time Dr Stirling assumed William Alexander as a Partner and the firm became known as Stirling & Alexander.
After Dr Stirling retired, William Alexander continued on his own but subsequently assumed James Alexander McLean who subsequently assumed as a Partner, John Stewart, in August 1906 and the firm was then known as McLean & Stewart.
The name McLean & Stewart has continued to the present day and there has been a succession of Partners. Historically, McLean & Stewart have been particularly known as a well-established and dependable firm of Legal Advisers, particularly to the West Perthshire farming community. The late Daniel Aitkenhead McNeill, who died in 1985, was an agricultural law expert and an external examiner to Edinburgh University Law Faculty. Jimmy McIldowie who died in 2004 was also a very well established and well-known figure in agricultural legal circles. The firm continues to specialise in Agricultutal Law headed by William Gordon Peebles,assisted by Hazel Langan and Gemma Baillie. However, in common with most other legal practices, McLean & Stewart offer a wide spectrum of legal and estate agency services.
