In an area lacking lunch options, Manns is a great choice. For a good selection and limited queue, aim for arriving before the lunch rush! The staff are a bit slow and lack any sense of urgency to get rid of a queue. There are a few tables and you're able to take your food away or stay in. There is a good selection of sandwich choices or you can make your own. The bread is lovely and fresh, and fillings generous.
Have just finished the most delicious sandwich from Manns at the Gasworks. It was so good I decided to write a review. Have noted the comments about delays, but for freshly made, delicious sandwiches, it's well worth the wait. Also, if you don't go at peak times 1200/12.30/1.00p.m. the queues aren't as long. Staff are lovely and really friendly too.
The great thing about Manns Deli is the quality of the ingredients... and that's about it. The inefficiencies and bottlenecks are widespread and it's painfully obvious how to solve them. In particular, the queuing system and having 1 person on sandwich duty is bonkers. The rest of the staff don't seem to do much. Slow is a complete understatement and on several occasions they have ran out of bread and chicken. I can't even compute that. The customer service isn't terrible, nobody is actively rude - though nobody is actively nice either. I'm paying for service, not just a sandwich. I suspect the only reason Manns is still in business is that they have a monopoly on the area - the only direct competition is a "chicken" sandwich from the Mace. I suggest management look up something called opportunity cost and visit a business like West to see how profitable they could really be.
In my opinion, Mann's at the Gasworks fails to deliver on any of the key tenets a small eatery like this should - soul, passion, convenience, and basic customer service. I will elaborate on one of these - the service is painfully slow, so much so that if I see more than 3 people queuing I usually give into hunger and survive on the free coffee and sugar biscuits provided by my employer which by the way has 5 stars. The slowness is rooted in a collection of process inefficiencies, which if management bothered to address, would equal more sandwiches sold, higher profits and less unhealthy sugar biscuits consumed. For example - why not pre-slice the bloody bread - it really is the best thing since......! This situation is made more infuriating when you observe 1 person doing 85% of the work. Humanity has been making sandwiches for generations, this is a problem we have solved Mann's management. I can only assume this place stays in business because there is effectively no competition in the area.
Food is nice but till service is inefficient which can mean queues. Could be a bit more organised like serviettes and milk with the cutlery rather than back at the counter or more than one person making sandwiches, which is the bottleneck, with two further down the chain doing till and coffee, so unoccupied. It's all about flow
I don't think I have ever tasted nicer rasberry and white chocolate scones. Bad side is they are frequently burnt or none left and the service is slow. Coffee can be hit and miss too. But it's worth the visit for the scones
Staff are nice and food is tasty but slow service and When I got a Philly steak sandwich all I got was one small piece of roast beef, not steak.
Unbelievable sandwiches - bread is delicious. Most amazing goats cheese salad.
Wonderful little cafe with beautiful food and great friendly staff. The scones are to die for.
Excellent scones great lunch options too
