"Manderston is the supreme country house of Edwardian Scotland; the swan-song of its era.A house on which no expense was spared with opulent staterooms, the only silver-staircase in the world and extensive "downstairs" domestic quarters. The House stands in 56 acres of formal gardens, with magnificent stables and stunning marble dairy. Manderston is one of the great Borders country houses. The original Georgian house was remodelled in the Edwardian era, with no expense spared. The highlight is the silver staircase, but there are Adam-inspired ceilings and marble floors, with high quality furnishings and well-preserved servants' quarters and kitchens. It's only open in April for 2022 so hurry!
Lovely gardens, expertly shown by a friendly greeting ! The tour of the house was very interesting and informative. Guides and parking assistant very welcoming too. Thanks for a lovely day
Wonderful place! One of the finest in Scotland.
Wow!! Such Beauty! We Didnt Get To Fit It All In One Day. The Gardens Have So Much To See. Lovely Little Tearoom In The Stable Yard Too.
A perfect example of an Edwardian House and as such featured in the TV series of that name. The guides were very friendly, informative and helpful and there is a lot to see and absorb. The collection of Huntley and Palmer biscuit tins must be unique and holds some very interesting examples. The kitchen, scullery and larder areas are especially interesting with several separate food larders - pastry, fish, cooked meat, raw meat, game I can't remember them all. Outside the house, the grounds are extensive and I would recommend a walk down to the lake, then cross what looks like a really rickety bridge, and back up the other side. Worth checking whether the cricket team is playing as it is great to see them on the field.
Beautiful house and home. Stunning interiors. The attention to detail in the building, furnishing and maintenance of this lovely house is most impressive. I particularly liked the circular morning room. The guides are really enthusiastic about the house and pleased to share their knowledge. The dairy is interesting and the gardens and grounds are worth exploring. The kitchens etc in the basement are huge and also worth lingering in. Do take a look at the biscuit tin collection.
This is really lovely Edwardian house and gardens. It's a must see for those that can appreciate the time and effort that must go into keeping such a beautiful grand place. The tour was very informative and enjoyable. We are looking forward to going back to see the gardens again.
What an amazing place! Took an interesting walk around the house. It's stuffed full of paintings, curios and beautiful, although worn, furnishings. The silver plated staircase is stunning. The gardens are lovely, and a walk around the lake through the woods is a must. The view over the lake looking back towards the house is not to be missed. Neither are the soup and cheese scones in the tea room. I'm just sorry I didn't have room left for any of the delicious-looking cakes. Delicious home cooked food at reasonable prices. A great day out.
Good day out. But go eatly and spend some time in the garden. People who work in the house, love what they do and it comes across when they talk to you.
For the price of around £12pp u could spend all day here. The house is stunning with guides nearby on every floor to answer any questions. The gardens and woodland walk are beautiful even at the end of the year, and the cafe is decent to be so small. Definately worth a visit!!!
