Fabulous day walking around Magdalen. Did the Addison Walk. Very peaceful tranquil and pleasant. The organ was playing when we visited the Chapel. Lunched there too. You can sit by the river to eat.nThoroughly recommend.
Stepping through the unpretentious porters lodge into history - following in the well-heeled boots of Oscar Wilde, CS Lewis, AC Grayling, John Betjeman, innumerable royalty, prime ministers, nobility, and, interestingly, Erwin Schrödinger - though we can never be entirely certain if he attended or not. But it should give one pause for thought as you enter the delightful series of prettily beflowered quads, and ramble along Addison’s Walk, through the Grove and relaxing Deer Park, along the river banks, and the winding pathways, that this is the place many great minds thought up their best thoughts, while others welled up their ambition.nWhile the tower looms over the college, and is a triangulation point when out and about in Oxford, the college is, rather like its Cambridge namesake, a little understated. The walks in the extensive grounds are and feel very private, and more like being in the rambling grounds of a huge manor house, quite unlike the often intensively manicured lawns of many colleges. So for that reason it is a little different. And the cloister is quite beautiful. Hard not to feel jealous of those who get to be here, and pace the ancient hallways.nKeep your eyes peeled for that effortless superiority, though I’m guessing you’ll find it hard to spot spoiler: it never existed - they all had to work really hard
The £10 are definitely worth it for the large facility. The college is really beautiful, with lots to discover and explore. If you’re there around lunchtime, you can also get a reasonably priced meal in the cafeteria. Just keep in mind that the main cafeteria is closed to visitors until 2 PM, as that’s when the students are eating.
Absolutely stunning! We visited Oxford in July and had decided on visiting Magdalan college. We paid 15 pounds for a joint ticket with the Botanic Gardens across the street. Our visit to Magdalan exceeded expectations. The grounds are absolutely stunning! The attention and care given to the flowers and gardens is unreal. Addison’s path is a beautiful place for a walk, and to view the deer in July. It was nice and quiet when we were there, which just added to the positive experience. So glad we visited.
If you love beautifully planted gardens and grounds, I would recommend it. A very pretty old college. I recommend visiting between March to April for all the showy spring blooms. Though, I'm sure the ground would be full of roses and other ornamental flowers in the summer months as well.
