Machiya is a gem we discovered right next door to the Harold Pinter Theatre after watching a musical. We loved this restaurant! Arriving at 9:00 PM, just 10 minutes before the kitchen closed, we were fortunate to avoid any queue. The beef udon soup was the best I've had - the portion was huge, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The katsu sauce was really special, surpassing most I've tried before. The convenient location and late kitchen hours make it perfect for post-theatre dining. I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for delicious Japanese food.
After searching online for the most rated Japanense restaurants in London, Machiya popped up and I can understand why. The decor may be simple upstairs perfect for lunch but downstairs you have a more restaurant style setting perfect for dinner. The best Japanese places aren't the high end ones which are usually overpriced but places like Machiya which focus on food quality at honest prices.. each dish was exquisite with unique and punchy flavours. It's not your standard Japanese place - here they are very creative with their dishes! The service was also fantastic as we were served by a lovely lady who was very attentive and always smiling. No sushi on the menu here but we'd recommend having a selection of the starters as a nice way to sample a few things. Look forward to coming back again!
Comes here due to high rate on reviews plus I often saw a long queue outside, however I didn’t find it that impressive…just average. The portion was good however some of the dishes were lack of flavour. I order classic Gyudon sliced beef it was a bit dry and beef was not tender. However, the most disappointing thing is the service. I didn’t feel welcome by the staffs - they were definitely not rude, but also not friendly. It is a very common thing that staff say goodbye / thank you as you’re leaving a Japanese restaurant…but I didn’t recall that or they only said it out of the manner that I said it first.
Happened to come across Machiya whilst on our way to the Japan Centre. Friendly and welcoming on arrival. Swiftly shown to our seats which were the bar/counter style. The lady serving us was chatty and attentive and easy to interact with. Food arrived pretty quick and was amazing. The pork katsu is better than many I have had even in other countries kirin beer on tap is a MUST! Hope to come back once again
A firm favourite of ours due to excellent service, lovingly prepared food and small size not noisy!. But the star is the food. Never been disappointed with balanced seasoning and loving presentation. A lovely gastronomic oasis in London.Food: 5/5
Small Japanese restaurant managed by very friendly Japanese people. Amazing food, tried the Chicken Katsudon and their new Courgette / Shrimp rice bowl: great taste, great seasoning. The Chocolate tart was also 10/10 to wrap up a perfect meal!Food: 5/5
Went there at around 3pm to avoid the lunch queue. Ordered Donburi Gyudon and Pork Katsudon and they are so good. Particularly impressed by how the pork has been fried perfectly without overcooking the pork & losing the juice. The egg has also been cooked well with adding the broth, mirin, etc.
Loved everything I ate here. The katsu wagyu beef was so flavourful, the best steak I’ve had in a long time. The matcha crepe cake was also a highlight, you could tell the matcha was very high quality and the crepes themselves were so delicate and light. My only issue was that the seats were not comfy and the space was a bit cramped but the food and lovely staff more than made up for it. Thanks!
After seeing perfect days side note: incredible films Wenders still has it we were in the mood for Japanese food and Machiya is within walkable distance from the picture house down a side street. Restaurant is fairly small with friendly and attentive staff, lowkey vibes. I had the homemade lemonade and Imogen had the homemade iced green tea - both were amazing. Food came out quickly and was of an excellent standard, the karaage chicken was crispy with a delicious chili sauce. The agadashi tofu was also amazing. Food was also very reasonably priced and of a very high standard, definitely recommend
The restaurant is very small and intimate but the quality of the food is amazing. We came at a very busy time and we had to wait quite a while for the food to arrive but it was well worth it.Food: 5/5
