Stayed for 2 days, was a really nice stay. It looked fantastic on the outside, and the inside was just as nice. The rooms were matching and fit the setting, really comfy beds and decent rooms all round. I've seen some reviews saying they are dated, but that is just the theme of the hotel. Could do with some sockets by the bed. Bathrooms were very modern and spacious. When staying, you can use the leisure facilities for free when you stay and get a free breakfast on certain packages. We were there because of the deal with Chester Zoo. The breakfast was really nice. The staff were supper friendly and helpful. Rooms: Very comfy and accommodating. Very nice decor. Safety: Felt very safe and secure Walkability: Nothing nearby noteworthy but has nice country walks Food & drinks: Very nice food, and there was a bar serving drinks.
To start with a positive - the hotel and restaurant felt understaffed due to a wedding, but they were working their behinds off to try and make up for it. The decor across the hotel is very dated, and definitely needs a makeover. The room had no hairdryer, and the soap/shower gel dispensers were all empty. The shower was on par with a water pistol. Other than that, the room was fairly clean. The evening meal was decent, but overpriced for what it was. Too few vegetarian options. Again, understaffed but the staff who were there were working hard. There are no cocktails at this place, contrary to what is advertised on their website. Breakfast was disappointing - there's a menu but it was just a buffet, and the ingredients seemed cheap. Overall - much better value for money elsewhere. Staff need support. Macdonalds need to invest some money into the place, and maybe help their staff out with a few more hands on deck. Would not return. Underwhelming.
Upon arrival, the hotel initially appeared to have a charming, country-style ambiance. However, the service and staff availability were extremely disappointing. I stayed here for eight nights with two colleagues, and we will not be returning. There were no staff available at the check-in desk, and our electronic keys failed nearly every day, requiring frequent re-scanning. The bar was consistently unattended, making it impossible to get a drink. Breakfast service was equally frustrating, as we had to wait long periods each morning to be seated. When our breakfast finally arrived, the sausages were cold. The hotel seemed short-staffed and unable to deliver satisfactory service, despite not being very busy. The food was overpriced and of poor quality. I paid £20 for a cheeseburger that came with a long-life bun, which disintegrated as I tried to eat it. Overall, this was the worst hotel experience I've had in the last five years. I advise against wasting your money here.
Seen a lot of negative reviews here recently but don’t understand why, me and my Mrs had a great night away. The spa was brilliant the evening meal and breakfast spot on too and every member of staff was friendly and helpful. Only slight downside was the rooms just need a bit of TLC. But other then that I would definitely come back here again as I’m going home feeling nice and relaxed
Me and two friends did a Spabreaks overnight stay with breakfast, £25 off the evening meal and a spa treatment included. What a great experience! All staff that we interacted with were friendly and helpful. The facials were excellent and we were all floating after them. Good choice for the evening meal and the breakfast was superb. We will definitely book again. Highly recommended!
Had an awful nights stay that left us utterly exhausted for the next day. Firstly the fire alarm went off at 7pm freaking our dog out, we were told the steam in someone’s shower was too hot and probably triggered it. Ok fine, but then it went off at 2.45am and 3am….. which utterly traumatised our dog not to mention ruined our nights sleep. We had no apologies. Other things the bed was so soft but not in a good way it just had zero support, so really uncomfortable. It was a warm night when we asked if they had a fan we got told no we’ve only got a few and they are with other guests. Tried to use the pool but no staff anywhere to give wristbands to get access very tired decor not like it looks online but all that is nothing compared to their clearly over sensitive fire alarm system
It's such a shame as has so much potential. Lovely drive down to the building but could do with a little more maintenance. Food was good although on pricey side. Dated building which needs modernisation and redecoration. Service is OK but could be improved with better leadership. Staff need smartening up. Customer service again good as everyone was helpful when asked but work to do here. Anticipating stock for a bank holiday weekend, when a wedding alsobooked to take place. Rooms: Rooms need some tender love and care. Decorating and smartening up, bring tech to modern day would help improve customer satisfaction. Food & drinks: Food overall us if good, high quality. Wine list needs updating as vol isn't correctly representing whats on the bottles.
The venue, from the outside, looks like a grand and rustic hotel, with beautiful gardens around the back and a stunning drive up to the reception area. Inside, however, is dated and falling apart. You don't need to look far to find peeling or ripped wallpaper, stained carpets and dirty walls. It is an older building but it truly shows and it isn't pretty. We booked a spa break package which included an afternoon tea. When we arrived, the man at the till initially got our booking wrong so we needed to correct him which was a bit awkward. We were then served a very disappointing few sandwiches which were soaking wet and very small as well as a few quite unpleasant cakes. The only part we enjoyed were the scones. We then each had our spa treatment. I opted for the manicure and the lady who served me was 10/10 fabulous. I didn't catch her name but she pampered me and we had a great laugh together, my nails looked stunning. She was fantastic and really was a highlight of the stay for me. Dinner was included at a £25 voucher per person towards the bill so we each chose something different. I think only one of us truly enjoyed the meal but the service was overall poor. We had 2 courses before our first round of drinks even appeared and we were overcharged quite a bit for alcohol later in the evening. The waitresses seemed rushed off of their feet with one young girl nearly in tears. There was a wedding on at the venue so we assume this was why the service was so poor. At one point I ordered a lemonade and didn't get it until nearly 30 minutes later. The price of it was also staggering. The food was either burned or undercooked. I had a salad which was fine had quite a few black leaves in it but aging lettuce doesn't put me off but the chips were practically raw. One person at our table ordered a burger which was black from being overcooked. Another person ordered pasta which she described as inedible. The breakfast wasn't much better but the service was quicker. We at least didn't need to wait a long time for our drinks which was an improvement. The full breakfast was quite bland and arrived cold but at that point we were so hungry from the night before we ate it without complaint. I would say overall if you're after a cheap spa break and are willing to accept that cheap will mean unclean, poor service and subpar food then this will be a fine place for you. We had a terrible time even before we got there trying to ring the reception the line was dead/we got transferred to dead lines/nobody picked up. The pros would definitely be the personality of the staff. While the food service was terrible, the spa and reception staff were at least friendly and welcoming. The poor girl trying to serve drinks on the first night looked out of her depth and struggling so seems like they might need to take better care of these hardworking people. Another pro would be location. It's close to the zoo and the grounds are nice. Won't visit again, premier inn is down the road and we should have just gone there. Rooms: We checked in and the rooms were drab. Very dated with minimal plug sockets which meant we needed to take turns using everything. There was black mold behind our taps and the walls were quite stained with time I suppose. Not exactly charming. Housekeepers came in while we were out but the bath actually looked dirtier after they had come in. There were weird muddy marks on the side which definitely hadn't been there before. Nearby activities: Chester Zoo is a very short drive away Food & drinks: Menu is overpriced and the food was not cooked correctly
Very disappointed, was supposed to be a little midweek luxury treat but the food was extremely poor. The starter for the evening meal was nice but both mains were almost inedible, menu was limited so my husband chose fish and chips. The fish was overcooked and dry with too much batter. There was no choice of vegetarian meal and my meal was hardly touched, it was tasteless. We ordered wine which was dumped on the table with no word of greeting, even the usual check that this is the wine we ordered. We had booked the expensive spa package and expected better. Breakfast was even worse. I ordered smoked salmon and scrambled egg and was told in a loud voice that this was £5 supplement. I said that seemed a lot so again the waitress Faye, said in a loud voice that she would check our package and came back announcing to everyone that we had only paid £6 for breakfast. The package was £158 and included bed and breakfast and so much towards the evening meal. How embarrassing and crass. To top it all my husbands breakfast was burnt, the sausage and bacon rock hard and was sent back. A really bad experience overall. The food and service was inferior to even a pub chain, oh and they ran out of beans!!! How do you do that, people were complaining who had tried to choose vegetarian breakfast and there were no beans.
I didn't stay, but visited for a spa treatment. It was possibly the most unpleasant massage experience I've had. The treatment itself was amazing, and Veronica was fantastic. That was 10/10. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was terrible. The treatment room must've been close to the staff room because for the entire hour I could hear staff chatting and giggling and phones going off. There was a door that kept opening and closing and not only did the hinge squeak every time, but the suction made the door of my treatment room bang against the frame. There was no music and the conversations were so loud I could hear what they were talking about. In the last 15 minutes I could also hear a young boy about 4 maybe? shouting and running around, and again - it was so loud I could hear his mother calling him and now know his name! Not his fault, of course. Final straw was I was shown the garden relaxation room, and there was one container of orange water but it was nearly empty so it tasted more like diluted orange juice. I didn't drink it and couldn't get out of there quickly enough. I could not relax at all, and honestly would never go back based on this and don't think it was worth the money. It would be absolutely fine for a pair having a couples massage who want to chat, or for a group celebrating a birthday or wedding. But definitely not for someone going solo wanting a tranquil experience. I felt bad for Veronica because she was very good and had some lovely touches, like hot towels which felt very cozy. Such a shame as it was a birthday treat my husband booked for me, so not something I often get the chance to enjoy! It was in no way the "oasis of peace and tranquility" advertised.
