The access from the A48 is not inspiring, pot holes, roadworks, and industrial estates, but in less than 2 miles you arrive at the fascinating Lydney Harbour. The place has a wealth of history, interesting walks, great views and various sculptures and remanants of the industrial past. There is also an info point, cafe and plenty of seating. Parking is free but can get very busy.
My husband stumbled upon Lydney harbour after taking a wrong turn on his motorbike a while ago and always wanted to bring us back for a visit. He couldn’t believe how much it had changed since the last time he visited. The car park is just a short walk away, with an ice-cream van parked up perfect for a hot day. Attractive new safety railings surrounding the harbour, which had lots of boats floating on clear blue waters. A new toilet block and information room. Our daughter had a gorgeous milkshake from the Café, which had plenty of picnic benches. Lots of rubbish bins around, which is nice to see to keep the place litter free.
A lovely surprise at the end of a very industrial road. Free parking a short walk from an excellent little café. The round walk is mostly wheelchair accessible bar the first lock gate which has a step at both ends. Great views of the River Severn. Popular with dog walkers and joggers.
Went at sunset a great time for atmospheric photos
Visited here after a morning at Puzzlewood. Lovely little spot, information boards along the way, a few benches with wonderful views, picnic benches and plenty of parking along the road to the harbour. Well worth a visit.
Maps tried to take me through gates of industrial estate several times so we ignored it and carried on ahead and found the harbour. Ice cream van by gate. Nice area for dog walks. Plenty of bins that I could see but nota place for young kids as no safety rails!!! Hence 4 stars. I did not go all round but it was pleasant. Sailing club nearby but no pubs or anything. Missed opportunity really.
Lydney harbour is a little off the beaten track but it is a worthwhile detour. Follow the signs to Lydney harbour as you travel along the A48 on the western banks of the Severn estuary. The road down to the harbour is full of potholes and goes alongside semi-derelict trading estates. Once you pass these you come to free parking just before the harbour. There are no facilities such as cafes or toilets but there are fine views across the Severn. You can see Sharpness and the entrance to the Sharpness canal leading up to Gloucester, the old Berkeley and Oldbury nuclear power stations, the Severn Bridge and the Prince of Wales bridge behind. A short walk towards the entrance of the river to the Severn and you can cross the lock gate and then walk along the side of the Severn with the moored yachts on your right. A few notice boards help visitors to understand the various features of the Severn.
OMG What dump!! Nothing there at all apart from grotty toilets & a Cafe with disgusting tea & cakes!! You have to drive through industrial estates & scrap yards to get the run down car park!! Boat area is so rundown & you have keep your dogs on a lead!! Stay away as the place is shocking & so rundown!!
Lovely place to walk the dogs and take children. We took the longer walk to the left and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
A calm and serene place, great for walking the dog, bike ride or just to sit and reminisce.
