Terrific place for watching nature in a wetland habitat. Former quarry workings and sewerage works flooded to create lakes. Good accessible paths lead around the reserve with substantial hides. Lots to see. Finish up at the delightful cafe where there is a good selection of drinks and food. Free car parking and an honesty box for donations. Clean toilets too. Well worth a visit.
Fantastic place for nature lovers. Small parking so not many people can visit at the same time. Very easy, wheelchair accessible paths where you can spot a lot of interesting plants and insects. Bird hides provide fantastic opportunity to see birds feeding. Many water birds among reeds and trees. You have access to the river too so a lot things to enjoy. Real gem of county Durham.
A dream nature reserve - lovely walks through woods and wetlands, with nature at the forefront of the site. A wonderful haven for a wide range of birds - greylags,TL tufted ducks, water rail, woodpeckers, golden crest, nuthatch, gold finches, and so on. Well positioned hides enable you to be really close, but a decent pair of binoculars allows you to see other birds across the wider stretches of water. Wonderful.
Had a lovely walk around the easy path, and then found the water hide! A massive area of rocks near the River, an absolutely brilliant day out. We stayed for ages playing with rocks. Then we went to the cafe and the staff were ever so friendly.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Dog friendly site on lead & cafe inside. Lovely walk, plenty of bird hides to use, great find on a cloudy March morning. Cafe food good, pleasant ladies greeted us and made us feel welcome, well worth a visit!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Gorgeous frosty walk around the pond. Saw a variety of birds. Hides all around with good views across. The walkway through the reeds is closed as it has fallen into disrepair. I’m sure Northumbrian water could fund a replacement.
Brilliant place for bird watching.little cafe and toilets on site.there are a few hides to sit in especilly good if you want to be out of the weather. Dog-friendliness: dogs are welcome but must be on lead. Picnic area: plenty of picnic tables dotted about nearthe cafe area.
Great place to visit, nice walk. Some Wildlife hides have carpeted seats. Coffee shop lovely, with ringtons coffee. Friendly staff, would recommend.
Very nice place to visit. Easy accessible and well maintained paths. Little shop to buy coffee, icecream and momentous. Also freely accessible toilets which are also very clean. Friendly staff.
Super nature reserve! Lovely circular walk around the lake takes about an hour, several stops along the way at look-out huts. Nice café at the start/end as well. Parking is a suggested £2 donation via text message or can pay in shop. Nice smooth gravel path good for balance bikes as well. Dogs have to be on lead as there are a lot of birds in lake.
