Just castle ruins without any touristy approach. Parking directly in front of it. You have to climb stairs to get up. Outdoor seating close by. Free to visit.
Situated on a rocky hillock, originally built in the 1100's and regularly fought over by the Normans, the Welsh and the English, finally being burnt in a rebellion led by Hywel ap Rhys in 1532 and never rebuilt. There's quite a dramatic statue nearby dedicated to a local man who was executed in the town. He was a wealthy landowner so quite why the statue shows a knight in armour heavens knows, though even the designer describes it as representing a brave nobody! The remaining ruins are situated next to a car park that charges you to park and even charges if you want to go to the toilet. Clearly the town doesn't want to welcome visitors.
29-08-24. Welcoming town with great history. Popular as a motorbikers pit stop. Plenty of pay as you go parking space, from .90p for an hour, £1.20 for 4 hrs and more. The castle built by Romans, fortified by the Normans, is now, a well kept ruin on a hill that is accessible for those willing to hike. Great for the kids to be mindful of, what was, when looking down. There are picnic tables at on the same level of the statue of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan, giving good views of the children's park and its surrounding car park.
Not a lot left of the castle itself but a beautiful location. Steeped in history like many of these mid Wales towns. A very good sandwich/baguette shop just up the road. The castle has tables so it's z good place to have lunch.
Nice little castle ruin with the car park next to it. Also a small museum as well with the story of the town.
