St Llonio's Church in Llandinam claims origins back in 520. Located on a spur jutting above the River Severn, the church is thought to have originally been a clas. Clasau plural of clas, a Welsh word that can be translated to cloisters were native Welsh Christian structures in early medieval period. Unlike later Norman monasteries, they were single buildings, autonomous and community run. Many clasau became dependencies of Norman monasteries after the Invasion, or became the foundations of the Norman churches. All but the 13th century square tower and north wall of the chancel was rebuilt in the 19th century by George Edmund Street. Much of the glass dates from Street's reconstruction or soon after. The pane featured here shows "St Pudenziana and St Prasside" cleaning up the blood of the martyrs, dedicated by Elinor Powell to her parents in 1874. A small number of original features remain. Partially obscured by the 17th century choir stalls are a pair of tombs in the old chancel wall. Alongside the 19th century font is a heavily damaged medieval font. Sources say it is Perpendicular in style, but there is no suggestions of age.
Beautiful church. Amazing services.
