Lovely place for a walk, all flat and highly accessible. Passionate and chatty staff and wasn't too busy on a bank holiday Monday. Lots of birds but easier to hear them than see them in the tall reeds.
Great experience, not only a great cause but also educational. We visited in early March and although we couldn't experience and see everything it was still very enjoyable and a great trip out also got up close with a Robin who was very photogenic . The shop has loads of different things to chose from, from binoculars, keyrings and even mugs. With it being a rainy day we went to the cafe for a brew and a little treat, I'm sorry to the lovely staff as we stood there for ages as the options were too hard to chose from, so I highly recommend! Great for the family and kids and even the four legged friends as theirs a dog route also.
Nice to visit again after 2years in hibernation. Saw marsh harriers X 3. Lots off black headed gulls. The sky tower is a nice addition, photo is attached from the top.
Fabulous reserve with so much to see even late January when alot of vegetation dies back but with lots of winter visitors & migrants feathered ! to see. I arrived by train to Silverdale via Carnforth. Main visitor centre just a short walk from there. RSPB Staff greet people on arrival to ask if anything particular you want to see & give advice of best places within the reserve. Main reserve has several large hides which are excellent & provide superb views across the lagoons & reedbeds. Information boards & notices's pretty much everywhere. I had a lovely lunch pie & peas in the onsite cafe & theres also a very good shop. Lots of on site staff looking after the site which is a huge credit to everyone. Excellent viewing platform Skytower which gives wonderful view over most of site. Loads of birds to see whilst I was there saw Egrets, Pintails, Goldeneye, fleeting glance of Marsh Harrier & too many more to mention. Not only birds to see you have chance to see Otters which I sadly didn't but did see a stoat. Didn' manage to venture to the coastal hideswhicch look out into the sands & salt marshes but that's for another day. Wonderful site & I will visit again soon.
Great afternoon even in the rain, especially as it cleared up by late afternoon. Lovely cafe which we enjoyed before going round the reserve. Great expanse of reedbed and marsh in a valley next to morecambe Bay. Wonderful walks leading to hides where numerous special species can be seen with patience and luck. Car parking easy access to centre which has a cafe serving some local produce. There is a gift shop selling nature related products and accessible toilets downstairs. Most paths are wheel friendly and one walk being dog friendly. Just a lovely place to spend several hours with walks around the coast to Silverdale and beyond. Friendly staff. Free of you're a member or join and get free entry to this and other RSPB reserves locally and nationwide.
Leighton Moss sky tower has fantastic views across the Reed beds, great to take kids up, in a safe way to get a birds eye view of the reserve. The shop and café are great and the parking is easily accessible.
Managed by the RSPB it’s a great place to spot local and migrating wildlife, particularly birds. The main visitor centre has a shop and cafe and car park, which do get busy on nice days , so arrive early. Most of the hides can be accessed by wheelchair. It’s worth taking your binoculars if you have them, although you can rent them or buy them in the shop. Pond dipping kits also available to hire. There are regular guided walks which can be booked online- worth doing if you want to learn more. Education visits by schools are also popular and enjoyed by children
Fantastic day out, wardens and visitors all so helpful, pointing out what and where was best to view the Marsh harriers and bittern, so lucky to see both species, occasionally fairly close, 20 to 60m away, also at a few hundred m away through binoculars where we took picture from top of tower, managed to see adult male, female followed by a juvenile Marsh harrier. We're able to take our dog, on a lead, along a designated path through the centre of the reserve
This country needs more places like this! Great knowledgeable staff nice accomodating café and visitor centre. Confirmable and adaptable hides too and good well maintained paths. Marsh Harriers and all sorts of water birds about too.
