Living nearby we thought it convenient to put my wife's car in for a MOT test. First of all they said £45 for the test when online it said £25, so upon calling them back they accepted this. However after having the car for 2 full days to diagose why it had failed (a windscreen wiper and faulty handbrake) they quoted £370 (which they reduced to £340) for repair (on top of the original test fee). I was told the parts to repair the handbrake were Mercedes main dealer only and they came in at £180 ex vat plus all the labour. They were also serving a fair measure of pressure selling insisting I had to confirm that day so they could get the part. Having a reasonable mechanical knowledge and the ability to search online, I found the part for £32 inc vat and delivery within seconds, so I called them back and told them we'd be back to collect the car. Clearly frustrated, the Manager (I assume) told me it was illegal to take the car away without a valid MOT certificate, which is incorrect - if you are taking it away to have repairs done it is legal provided your car is generally safe and roadworthy. We paid Kwikfit Stonehaven another £25 to have the car released back to us. We took it to another reputable garage the following day and had the handbrake repaired and re-tested all in for £160 including a new MOT test fee with no advisories.

Took car in with suspected slow puncture or defective valve and was attended to immediately by very courteous Manager who also provided good advice. Cannot praise his attitude enough and will definitely use again. So impressed I intend booking there for next MOT. 10/10 :-)

AVOID! NEVER DO YOUR MOT AT ANY KWIK FIT CENTRE. I wish I could put a negative marking. They always fail your MOT for no reason and make a hefty bill. They will encourage you to leave your car during the test and give you the bad news over the phone as you likely to accept the cost if you are away and want your car on the same day. Unfortunately this is the strategy they apply to rip you off. I was fooled once paid over £700. Second time I stayed during the test, challenged them when they made a £570 bill, took a second opinion at a local centre and saved over £350. Now it's up to you. I will be glad if this helps you.
