I am writing this Review on behalf of my Mother who came to Knighton Hospital as a Patient after a spell in Bronllys Hospital, following a major Stroke. Rather than apply any "labels" to denote the quality of care received, i prefer to highlight certain areas which i feel need commenting on. Most of the Nursing Staff showed compassion, understanding, and attentiveness when carrying out their duties in respect of Mother's needs (which were recognized to be quite extensive in view of her Illness). However, there were concerns expressed by us as a family over the administration of Medication for the control of discomfort/pain for my Mum. I questioned the giving of Pain relieving Capsules as a matter of course, when they should have been given only after checking whether the Patient was actually in pain at that time-on a PRN basis; it appears that Hospital policy (and maybe in a broader sense, general NHS policy) decrees that Patients be administered relief before their discomfort becomes apparent, i.e. the possibility exists that there could be a build-up of Medication in the Patient's system so that they may experience difficulty in excreting it through the usual means (and the tolerance level(s) to a particular drug might also by implication be increased). In effect, it seems the patient might conceiveably become habituated to a particular Medication through over-use, however well-intentioned. Overall, there needs to be more Communication between those who prescribe Medication and those who administer it, to avoid any possible mis-interpretations in such an important area. Extra care should also be exercised when Medications are changed so that all involved are fully aware of the possible ramifications of such changes. I stress that i speak only of my Mum's case, as it concerned us hugely as a family. There should be a back-up Hoist available in the event that the main one fails/is otherwise unavailable for Patients who require this piece of equipment. Finally, meal arrangements could be more flexible to enable those Relatives who wish to participate in the feeding of their loved ones to do so (having due regard to the safety of the Patient, and being advised on this, where appropriate, by Staff). In our Mum's case, this was addressed satisfactorily. I wish to thank those Staff who were observed to be dutiful in their care of my Mum for their attention to her needs during her stay at Knighton. Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year to you.
