History:
The entrance building is over 600 years old. The school was originally on a different site, but is now near Lakes Leisure Kendal, recently called Kendal Leisure Centre. It has had many recent extensions, including a new hall, maths and ICT buildings, and an all-weather sports pitch on the Cinderovens site, which is adjacent to the school. Originally an all boys school, girls were taught on a different site until both branches were eventually merged into one with the previous girls' site being abandoned. In 1980 the school became known by its current name, and commemorative mugs were issued to all pupils and staff on the 25th anniversary of this event, which was 2005. The phrase Kirkbie Kendal was originally the town Kendal's name. In 2003, Kirkbie Kendal School was one of 14 schools in the North-East and Cumbria that were awarded specialist status by the Department for Education and Skills, entitling the school to its share of more than £2m worth of investment.
