Soaked in history, beautifully & lovingly restored & maintained. Our guides Jacqui & Eleanor have an obvious passion and extensive knowledge about their church. I would highly recommend this for a visit to anyone with an interest in old graveyards, church architecture/ history and the witch trials period. This remains a consecrated, functioning church too
Beautiful building. We visited recently to see the Calder Witches exhibition, and were treated to a guided tour by John, a member of the congregation, who does this voluntarily.nnThanks to John we spent a fascinating hour and a half learning the history of the Church and the local gentry involved in its history, and learning more about the unfortunate local folk mainly women who were persecuted as witches during the infamous 'witch craze' of the 17th century.nnThe church is a beautiful, peaceful place which is clearly well loved and beautifully maintained. There is even some original stained glass from the 15th century - absolutely astounding to see.
I was here one fine day and when i got to the door way of this kirk I saw that part of the wall of the church outside was littered with musket shot after being on a tour the guide told me that Oliver Cromwell and is army did this. but one of the villagers told me different the minster was telling a big yarn and locals where getting bored so they told somebody to go outside and fire of a few muskets so that the minister would stop the sermon. then they all could go to the pub. hew - way.
A beautiful old church with lots of interesting old headstones
Looked wonderful from outside. They advertise that the church is open during summer months on Sunday afternoon. They are, also fundraising. We went down on ast weekend of August and were early so sat outside from 1.45 to 2.30. Nobody arrived and church was locked. We went across the road to look at the graveyard and checked again before leaving but church was still locked. I take it they might depend on volunteers and perhaps someone was unwell but we were disappointed.
