Brilliant, but not for kids. There is more to read than to see. However, it is certainly not boring for someone interested in history or for a person who is curious and keen to discover new things. And once done, you are right by the cathedral and the pedestrian streets full of interesting shops, restaurants, and major brands outlets.
Absolutely brilliant! I found it truly fascinating to learn more about the life and death of England's Richard III. The staff at the centre are friendly and knowledgeable helping to explain the story. It's truly astonishing that his remains have been found centuries later and a testament to those who didn't relent and kept researching and investigating. See for yourself where Richard was found centuries later. Well worth a visit to the centre and to the neighbouring cathedral to see the tomb. A real asset to Leicester.
Absolutely loved visiting the King Richard III visitor centre. I'm very interested in Richard III and the Cousin's War, so a visit here was very interesting to me. The window, which shows the view of the changes through time, is fantastic. All staff were knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly. I will definitely be returning. Amazing experience! Very helpful staff members in this historical place! One volunteer gave me nearly 20 minutes of history lesson about how King Richard III’s life which I enjoyed immensely. My ticket will allow me to enter for one year and I would be going back to study the life of King of England who’s now in his resting place in this great city.
My spouse has a deep interest in Medieval English History, with King Richard III being one of his greatest fascinations. Surprisingly, this was the main reason for our visit to England. The cost for a family of 5 to visit on 7/2/24 was approximately $45 USD. The staff were all welcoming and knowledgeable, eager to discuss the different aspects of the visitor center. The ground floor delves into the historical events surrounding King Richard's reign, including his rise to power, the Battle of Bosworth, his demise, and the ascension of Henry Tudor. Moving up to the second floor, visitors can learn about the contemporary discovery of King Richard's grave and the scientific techniques used to confirm the identity of the remains, such as DNA testing, carbon dating, and forensic analysis of the skeleton. The museum is designed to be child-friendly with interactive exhibits and a costume area. What truly sets this museum apart is that it was constructed directly above the excavation site, culminating in a glass-enclosed room where you can view the actual location of King Richard's burial. Our experience at this museum exceeded all expectations, and we were absolutely captivated by it.
Very fascinating story of King Richard. Highly recommend visiting, we tried to book tickets in advance, but due to an error on the website we couldn't. The staff were helpful and we got the reduced rate at the visitor center.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
I promised myself I would go to King Richard’s III visitor Centre at some point when I had the time to really amerce myself and concentrate wholly by myself. It didn’t disappoint! I liked the Throne Room with the video playing in the background which gave a great background into his story. As I wondered through I was captivated by the interesting displays, historical events and learned quite a bit more I love to learn about our very rich royal historical past especially the “War of the Roses” and Tudor dynasty. The tapestry draped over the coffin was sublime and I found it incredibly interesting and because I’d seen the Bayeux Tapestry some years before I could relate to the figures on it in that context. The burial chamber was fascinating, I didn’t realise he was buried in such a shallow grave if you could call it that it seemed like he was just plonked there unceremoniously like a pauper not a king but then he was hated so much! Shakespeare did him no favours also but then he’s family batted for the other side and I’m sure he would’ve grown up with a somewhat skewed idea of King Richard. I felt a little sad in this area because I don’t believe King Richard was the monster history makes him out to be, evidence shows he was a brave man not a coward, he was a “do’er” and made positive change and an intelligent person with a passion for God and his country. The fact that he had physical deformities in a hump on his back and walked with a limp pointed him out to be something less than and if you like a “monster” as with all people born with physical or mental differences then, may be that was part of his story which endures to this day! A member of staff was giving a talk about the burial, the site and possibly theories of what happened to The 2 Princes. I was captivated by her thorough knowledge, passion and really intrigued by the discussion that ensured from that with the other visitors too. I only saw downstairs and didn’t venture upstairs to the story of how they discovered The King etc because I wanted to come back and do it all again with my husband and hopefully teen daughter. I thoroughly recommend a visit, it’s beautifully done and a part of the very rich history of Leicestershire!
Lovely visit. The way the experience is laid out makes it simple to understand, great to have so many interactive ways to learn. Very well presented and well worth a visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Some parts of this centre are wonderful, but others are lacking for me. I found the information to be very clunky. Some of the imagery that had information on it was not even readable as the lights or shadowing overtook the lettering. That is a bit of poor editing. The information on the discovery of King Richards bones and the 3D analysis of wounds on bones was absolutely brilliant. The staff were ok. I am surprised that there is no concession for people with a disability and there carer.
This is an interesting new museum that explains about the history of Richard III and how he ended up under a car park space, which is part of the museum site. There is an entry fee, but you get entry for a year included.
