The site is entered via a gateway crossing over a fairly fast flowing river. A neatly cut grass path leads towards the site passing over what appears to be a water-filled fosse – this could be a flooded original moat or boundary ditch. On the right, the gate opens to the tree enclosed church grounds. It feels private and away from humanity - not an unpleasing sensation. There are mounds that are firm under feet and perhaps contain rubble collapse from the church. Stumps of lichen blotched stones peep over the long grass and the whole site almost whistles when the wind blows. Historically, there seem to be many references to the site, all with different names; Kilmeleyt (Killyleagh) is referred to in Pope Nicholas’ taxation records (1306). Earlier forms of the name may be: "Cell an laigh – the church of the hollow … but the nearest seems to be Cell maghleth and we take leth to be the name of the river on which the church is situated. The present name of the church is Killowen – church of the river." (McKeown, 1934, 56 – 57). O’Laverty tries to link a reference in the Annals of the Four Masters to the site: "The Four Masters at the year 1149 speaking of the army led by Niall O’Loughlin say…Cill-Aedhain, pronounced Kill-een, presents in sound a great similarity to Killowen, the position of which would correspond with the account in the Annals." (O’Laverty, 1878, 331 – 332).
