I'm an ex-student of the school, I could not wait to get out of there and I'm sure I was one of the majorities of students who felt that way. This review was removed by the school as they simply cannot handle the truth, maybe they should step up and settle this by emailing me. Of all the great things spoken about the school, I can only identify a few things about the school that are in any way positive. Of course, some students will say that the school's growing negative reputation is down to the students, but I can assure you that is not the case. The students are young men aged 11-18 and from ages 11-16 a level of misbehaviour is expected within reason, this age is the prime age for young men to start understanding the 'adult' world around them, however, John Hampden Grammar School is seemingly hell-bent on restricting this as much as possible. Of course, at this moment I would like to clarify that compared to some other schools it is a great school for turning out grades, but it also turns out a lot of students who are incapable of operating in the outside world and/or in a social situation. The school's control over the students is done completely wrong, with harsh work regimes, pointless homework, mindless hours of sitting around not being taught or doing work and a scarce amount of student support. The student support has a major part to play in the amount of student neglection that takes place in the school. If a student has noticeable learning difficulties then they will be able to get plenty of support from the learning support department, however, if a student hasn't got a noticed or recognized learning condition then they will be ignored and told they are "stupid" and that they will not get far in life with the "poor attitude" they have. Either John Hampden is oblivious to the fact that there is such thing as a behavioural disorder or they simply think that any student who accumulates a number of behaviour points is just incapable of learning and therefore should be neglected and ignored in lessons. JHGS has a "strict" zero tolerance bullying policy, which in fact is so strict that the school lets a large amount of it slip. There is a lot of bullying in JHGS, some of which you expect with boys this age and of which will sort itself out, however, some bullying that occurs is targeting people for their "differences" and stretches for years. These instances have been known to be reported and ignored. The school is also extremely inconsistent, with half of the teachers not knowing the school's rules or plainly abusing the system in order to get a level of satisfaction out of the power they have. Many teachers will punish a student for something that will often be overlooked by some teachers, this inconsistency leads to a large number of feuds around the school's rules. A small handful of teachers are truly horrible people, they will pick a student of whom they don't like and make it their job to make their time in school as miserable as possible. Such as falsely punishing a student then giving them a sarcastic smile or saying "oooh what a shame boo hoo", sometimes the teachers are more immature than the students. For example, it is known that a teacher has made bets that a small group of students will fail their GCSE's, the same teacher humiliates students for their physical appearance and constantly punishes students for their political views. On the point of students opinions, no student is entitled to a controversial opinion, whether it is political or moral. Creativity and exploring possible changes in views surrounding such subjects can cause a student a lot of problems if it does not suit the agenda of the school. I cannot put enough emphasis on how bad this school is, DO NOT SEND YOUR SON HERE!

Our son has grown in both self-confidence and educationally since joining the school. He requires some specialist educational support which the school embraces, unlike many others, and this has been hugely beneficial to his academic performance. The recent changes to the school have, if anything, improved it further and our son’s results reflect this.

Excellent school! If you're fortunate enough to pass the 11+ and you happen to be male and looking for a grammar school then pick JHGS!
